Hello friends and enemies, etc

I have just installed an information kiosk in front of the building which was formerly a McDonalds, near the intersection of Grand and Chippewa. The piece is four sided, and reads, respectively,

"THE COLLAPSE OF THE ST. LOUIS SCHOOL SYSTEM"

"A MICROCOSM OF THE FAILURE OF AMERICA"

third side is a map of St. Louis

and on the fourth side, in restroom graffiti style:

"CHAIN YOUR MAYOR TO A PIPE IN YOUR BASEMENT"

"BEAT HIM TIL HE SINGS"

"IT'S YOUR FAULT TOO"

As this is an uncommisioned gift to the city of St. Louis, I doubt it will be there for very long. If you wish to view it, please feel free to pass by. I would guess that someone will damage and/or remove it within the next day or two.

THANKS,
Jason Wallace Triefenbach

Saturday May 17th 7PM
Barry Johnston Fine Art presents

IASTHAI:a speculative reenactment of the Dream War
by Jason Wallace Triefenbach

This is the inaugural artist micro-residency at our new Hollywood studio/ showroom.

Triefenbach's plans for the four day residency involve an immediate reversal of the usual timeline one might expect.

His performance and installation, which he describes as "...an acid trip down memory lane into the unresolved trauma of Westward expansion: its piggish annihilation of millenia-old indiginous spiritual traditions and the continuing karmic reverberations still gnawing at our culture's frayed wires," will not take place as a culminating event, but almost immediately upon his arrival: he is giving himself less than 24 hours to prepare for the event.

For the rest of his time here, Triefenbach plans to "see the sights, hit the beach, and try my hand at a bit of good old fashioned networking.

"

In the midst of such irreverence, Triefenbach's work evinces a carefully constructed social personae and working methodology in which sculptures, drawings, videos, and performances overlap and merge into one another in kaleidescopic fashion.

In a written statement, the artist describes his process thusly: "... a complex formal terrain upon which autobiography, fantasy and politics mingle, morph, and grow beyond this author's original intentions... I have tried to retain and hone the sense of impropriety I possessed as a teenager while bringing to the table a man's meal of subtlety, thoughtfulness, and force.

THIS WEEKEND IN CHICAGO:

I have 3 projects at Version08, all occuring at NFO XPO at VIADUCT 3111 N Western Chicago IL

The Fair opens at 1pm.
I am presenting:

COVER STORY: Through the Looking Rox (Outsider Internment Process Mural )

"Is anyone innocent of cultural piracy? Is maintaining an ethnic or [sub]cultural identity within the larger social stew advantageous, necessary, or even possible? This installation of 2D works on paper- mainly black and white but with highlights of color appearing sporadically- is comprised of drawings, photocopies and prints depicting Navajo rug designs as well as the artist’s own ’outsider’ interpretation of such, drawn in ink, charcoal and pencil. Interspersed therein are drippy ink abstractions in layers of wash, tending towards the style of sixties rock poster psychedelia as churned and regurgitated by contemporary ’prog punk’ graphical lexicon. The interplay of these various elements provides interference or ’static’ within the logic of the arrangement, obscuring a clear and easy reading of the whole.References are made to ideas of Authenticity,Representation, and the migration and cross-pollenization of cultural tropes (occuring both temporally and geographically, and often in a less than equitable manner). The resulting artwork represents a collapse of said authenticity, calling into question the manner in which each of us comes to understand and/or assimilate The Other into our own worldview." -JWT

later in the evening (sometime after ten):

Jason Wallace Triefenbach presents NINETEEN INCH NAILS
