| About Scott Shirk |
|
Scott Shirk has been playing saxophone in bands since he was 14 years old. He began to seriously study the saxophone at age 13 after hearing pop saxophonist Kenny G. After graduating high school, Scott attended Ithaca College as a Saxophone Performance/Music Education major, and studied classical saxophone with Dr. Steven Mauk and Dr. Jamal Rossi. While at Ithaca, Scott won the Ithaca College Concerto Competition on alto saxophone by playing Ibert's Concertino da Camera and the Yamaha Young Performing Artist Competition on soprano saxophone. He received his BMA from Ithaca College in 1995. While at Ithaca, Scott played lead alto saxophone for the Grammy nominated Jan Lewan Orchestra which took him all over the United States and to Europe. After leaving Ithaca, Scott taught high school band for 10 years until leaving the teaching profession to pursue a career in dentistry. During this time Scott was lucky enough to study jazz saxophone with Eric Marienthal and Nelson Hill. His major musical influences are Eric Marienthal, Dave Koz, Steve Cole, and Maceo Parker. Scott has been leading "Alias", a party band in Central Virginia, for the past 4 years in which he plays Saxophones, Keys, and does a little singing. Scott is currently working on a solo project which should be finished by the end of the year. Please check back here often to hear clips of what's going on in the studio. Thanks!
