Derived from the Akan people of West Africa, Sankofa means, "We must go back and reclaim our past so we can move forward, in order to understand why and how we came to be who we are today."
Sankofa Arts Kafé is located at 2820 Commerce St. in Dallas, TX 75226, 214.749.1911. Sankofa specializes in Cajun and Vegetarian Cuisines, herbal teas, smoothies, coffees, and signature beverages. Sankofa also offers published works by a number of locally and nationally recognized African American authors. In addition, each weekend Sankofa features live musical and spoken word performances by national and local artists and open mic events for upcoming artist who want to showcase their talents and be part of the rebirth of the art of Spoken Word.
Artists who have graced the stage at Sankofa Arts Kafé include OutKast, Erykah Badu, Common, Angie Stone and Bilal. Sankofa has also hosted book signings for Flo Anthony of "Gossip to Go with Flo," Amira Baraka, Ben Chavez, Dick Gregory, Katrice Berry and Reggie Gipson who wrote the poems for the movie Love Jones.
