Review from 11/12/05 Horriblefest show at Moe's Bar in Cleveland, OH.
"The show got out of hand as soon as it began, with Pittsburgh blast punks Rot Shit starting their set by whipping a live eel at the audience. Tables and chairs also got thrown around, and club owners threatened to stop the show two minutes after it began. Rot Shit played for about another three minutes, shoving crowd members, knocking their beers into their teeth, and quickly earning the wrath of most in attendance."

"Those looking for an exercise in pure punk rock stupidity need only take a look at the sleeve of this turd and be wowed for at least a month: a cut-n-paste mangling of the first KIDS LP cover, complete with "chick with dick" porn and Bigfoot. Yeah, pretty classic. The record??? Tuneless, completely falling-apart-at-the-seams, loud, rude, offensive... and hilarious. Songs about drugs, hot dogs, hate, and being a shitty teenage asshole. LOLI AND THE CLONES and Wimpy-era QUEERS covers. Horrible. I love it."

Rot Shit “Have You Seen Rot Shit?” 7" Second 7" by Pittsburgh’s Rot Shit but this time around without the female vocals. I dug the first Rot Shit record but this one is a bit more put together and the songs have a much better quality to them. This shit’s short, loud, fast, obnoxious, stupid, and offensive as hell. With song titles on the A side like “Fuck Yer DJ Night”, “Full Retarded”, and “Drive Fucked Up” and with the length of most of the songs ranging between twenty and forty seconds this record is certainly not for the PC-minded punk who likes his music in a more serious sort of jugular vein with every song ending in a barked out “FUCK!!!”. The B side gives us a 3 minute punk rock noise fest with the singer screaming out the names of both bands and people and immediately screaming “GAY!!!” at the end of each name called out. Comparable to the angriest more lo-fi Rip Off Records bands with a healthy dose of Angry Samoans and early Queers thrown in for good measure. Have I seen Rot Shit? Yes, I have. Twice. The second time was a perfect under ten minute short set the way punk should be played live. The first time though, I was hit in the face with a live eel as bottles and chairs whizzed by my head. The recording is primitive, the attitude really bad and I absolutely love the sentiments behind “Fuck Yer DJ Night” and “What The Fuck Is Weird Punk, which concludes with a hearty, chanted “FUCK FUCK FUCK...” etc. Hardcore and garage thrown together and then dragged through the gravel until bloody and disfigured. Five quickies on side one, one more on the flip (“Drive Fucked Up”) and that ends with another chant, this time it’s “DEAD DEAD DEAD…” This music will definitely fuck with ‘ya and, even without a lyric sheet, it’s not hard to feel the malevolence. Overblown and hilarious in its nature – think Angry Samoans, Nip Drivers, and all the comedy that punk can feasibly contain. Hyper-referential songs about emotional-chromosome-dunted topics like the hermetically-sealed world of record collectors and every insecurity they’ve endured in the last year, be they limited pressings, “weird punk,” DJ nights, or the Internet. On side B, they declare all of these things and more to be over, in a three-chord stomp that squeezes the blackheads out of this era’s nose. This is how you take command, folks. Rot Shit Have You Scene Rot Shit? 7” [Fashionable Idiots, 2008] Pittsburgh slob-punk outfit Rot Shit’s myspace page proudly describes their first single, The Worst Kids Ever, as “ALMOST KBD OOP.” Elsewhere on the Internet, singer Vinnie, responding to a charge that Rot Shit was a “joke,” rebutted that he would shortly be “doing free drugs in other cities in America because of ROT SHIT.” The band, in other words, exhibits tendencies both to self-mythologize and to act as ‘scene’ rabble-rousers. Their vibe is less style and flair than “free drugs,” alcohol and—sure—music. Have You Scene’s sleeve art attests to this: it features an assortment of regional Pennsylvanian beers, a bottle of MD 20/20, a weed pipe, a Boo-Ya Tribe record and unconvincing-looking cocaine cut into rails that spell out the band’s name, among other accoutrements. As one might expect, many of the songs on Have You Scene attack the pretensions of the punk rock intelligentsia. These include “Fuck Yer DJ Night,” “What the Fuck Is Weird Punk?!” and “Power Pop,” which contains the thought-provoking query: “You might have your fucking cocaine and all the chicks, but whatever happened to being fuckin’ PUNK?” (The capital letters, and the question mark, are audible.) On the B-side, Vinnie, over a doomy anarcho-punk riff, vociferously proclaims the deaths of artists as diverse as Jay Reatard, the Black Lips and Girl Talk. “Full Retarded” and “Drive Fucked Up” balance out this vitriol by celebrating the virtues of being a moron. The latter features trippy, spacey—one might even say weird—police siren sounds. Each song ends with a spirited shout of “FUCK!”—which, at one point, is reverbed-out and played in a loop. Have You Scene is a disgusting little concept album in which the retardo-snobbery of a select, specialized crew of producers and consumers is put to battle against actual pseudo-retardation. On one hand, Rot Shit’s steez is indebted to a kind of classic early punk attitude, perhaps as exemplified by Belgian cult favorites the Kids, the cover of whose self-titled debut appears, in defaced form, as the art for The Worst Kids Ever. Despite this, though, Rot Shit’s music is so strident in its stupidity that it doesn’t deserve more than a paragraph of critique, and ultimately that’s what makes it so successful.
