Robin: Too many to mention: Debussy, Alban Berg, early Baroque - esp. Dvorak, some Bartok, Franz Liszt. MOOKERJEE'S VIDEO JUKEBOX: STYLISH, CINEMATIC POP
Sounds Like
I would describe it as Elvis Costello meets Depeche Mode, with a touch of Fleetwood Mac thrown in. And the Smiths or Trashcan Sinatras - a jangly or dreamy sound. These songs are very much in the classic pop tradition, with ethereal, sometimes morbid lyrics that reflect my personalit. The sound, which can be a bit techno, mostly comes from something accidental that happens when recording.
The songs have ambient or jangly backgrounds, catchy vocal melodies, and a pervasive sense of yearning. They echo the alternative sounds of the postpunk ’80s. This is low budget indie pop, not slick studio stuff. For better or worse, only an independent producer could have come up with this sound.
A while back, I was the leader of the indie band Bleak House in Philadelphia. Back then, I wrote and sang jangly guitar pop, similar to early REM. Bleak House had lyrics you couldn’t make out, and I had ’80s-style hair. We were retro before retro. We played to country-western fans in rural PA. It wasn’t pretty.
My new songs have a more accessible sensibility. I like to think it combines the styles of the ’80s - jangly, danceable, or lush and dreamy - with yearning, poetic lyrics. It borrows from the sincerity of today’s Britrock bands (like Coldplay), but looks back to the stylish and quirky pop of the postpunk era (like New Order). Oh - and as the cd title ("Miserablism") suggests - "Walking On Sunshine" this isn’t.
