Born October 27, 1953 and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Robert Picardo ("Bob") graduated from the William Penn Charter School in 1971 and entered Yale University as a pre-med student, but opted to act instead. While at Yale, Bob landed a role in Leonard Bernstein's "Mass," a musical theater piece originally commissioned for the 1972 opening of the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. In 1974, during its European debut tour, performing with the Yale University Society of Orpheus & Bacchus, a cappella singing group as an undergraduate. With a B.A. in Drama from Yale, he enrolled at the Circle in the Square Professional Theater Workshop. That was in 1975; two years later, he was first seen on Broadway in “Gemini” .He waited tables for a couple of years during that time at a Italian Restaurant and then his theatrical work prospered (in 1976) when he appeared in the David Mamet play "Sexual Perversity in Chicago," and with Diane Keaton in "The Primary English Class." 1978 “Tribute” with Jack Lemmon.. Bob’s other theater work includes “Dr. McCaskill” in the theater production "In The Waiting Room" at the “Mark Taper Forum” “A Class Act” and “On the Twentieth Century “performed at The Pasadena Playhouse.. “Beyond Therapy” and “Geniuses” at the L.A. Public Theater, and “The Normal Heart” at the Berkeley Repertory Theater .With many more in the years to come. In 1978, starring in the west coast run of “Tribute” in Los Angeles, Bob auditioned for film and television roles. He launched his TV career in the 1980 miniseries “The Dream Merchants”, and in 1981 made his first film, “The Howling”--one of several Movie Roles for director Joe Dante. During his early TV years, he was all too often cast in "first husband" or "wrong boyfriend" supporting roles. Things improved in 1986, when he was hired to play the much-feared high school gym teacher Coach Cutlip in the weekly drama “The Wonder Years.” He went on to co-star as Dr. Dick Richard in the highly acclaimed Vietnam-era series “China Beach” (1989-91). A busy voiceover artist, he has supplied a variety of vocal characterizations for such series as “Dinosaurs” and “Batman”. Then being cast in his most famous role of his career as: “The Holographic Doctor on TV's “Star Trek: Voyager” (1995-2001) And then as “Richard Woolsey” in “Stargate SG-1”.and “Stargate Atlantis” For a more extensive information on his TV and Live appearances visit the website. In 2002, Bob authored the book “The Hologram's Handbook” which was published by Pocket Books. He won the “Viewers For Quality Television Founder's Award” for his roles in “The Wonder Years” and “China Beach”. Was nominated for an “Emmy Award” for his role as “Coach Cutlip” on “The Wonder Years” And nominated for an “Ovation Award” for his role on “On the Twentieth Century” He won a “Drama-Logue Award” for his role on “The Normal Heart” Away from acting, Bob is a member of the Board of Directors' Advisory Council of “The Planetary Society” where he has served since the late 1990's. He joined the Advisory Board of the San Gabriel Valley chapter of “Habitat for Humanity”. And the “Elizabeth Glassier Pediatric Aids Society” Bob resides in California with his wife Linda and his 2 daughters.
