MUNCIE -- The Muncie public skate park is about to bail -- abort for the uninitiated -- on local skateboarders unless badly needed repairs can be made.
Built in 2003 on a tennis court in Tuhey Park, the skate park has since fallen into disrepair with the wooden composite ramps showing signs of disintegration around the edges.
City parks officials are collecting cost estimates to rehabilitate the park, but haven't ruled out closing the park down if the project is too expensive.
Skateboarder Nate Vice, 16, said he worried closing the park would displace more skateboarders onto streets and private property.
"This isn't a great skate park by any standards," Vice said. "But it's fun."
Vice skates at Tuhey Park about five times a year when he visits his grandparents in Muncie.
At a parks board meeting last month, parks department superintendent Doug Zook reported that the city's insurance underwriters suggested the city close the park.
The park is currently closed indefinitely, Zook told The Star Press this week.
When Vice visited Tuesday, however, the entrance was open and there were no signs that the park was closed.
Zook responded that the parks department would secure the property.
The only thing left to attract skaters is the "mini ramp," a small half pipe.
Quarter pipes and other features are currently unusable because the city has removed the metal approaches that allow skaters to transition smoothly from the flat surface to the ramp.
Zook recommended to the board last month that the city remove the skateboard ramps.
The parks board debated the idea and ultimately decided to table the issue, allowing Zook time to collect cost estimates for repairs.
At the most recent parks board meeting this Tuesday, Zook said he was still gathering estimates.
If the city must close the park, Bailey suggested storing the ramps in the hope that rep
