You Can't Blow Up a Social Relationship.

Living so close to the Illinois State Capital Phallus of Illinois, the members of Resident Genius are affected by the political environment that befalls around them. These musicians are more than just passive observers of the black limousines ceremonially transporting the important and powerful. They are painfully-aware residents in a bureaucratic community. Evidence of this political influence manifested itself in a phone call to one longtime hero in the fields of history and activism, Boston University professor emeritus Howard Zinn. Ripping a page from the book of Bad Religion [who, in 1991, released a split with legendary activist, author, and Zinn friend, Noam Chomsky], they threw the idea of a split project to Zinn, who immediately jumped aboard. The result is excerpts from some of Zinn's most important talks and six socially charged songs reflecting a discernable interest in the greyer aspects of daily life that will maintain residence in your mind long after the cd has stopped. For final touch ups, the band turned to friend and all-around punk rock renaissance man Mass Giorgini from Lafayette, Indiana's famed Sonic Iguana, who in turn left his indelible mark on this one-time release. The Zinn excerpts - most of which are seeing official release for the first time on this cd - have been circulating through underground channels for some time now. Roger Lesiner, of Radio Free Maine, offered his invaluable assistance by opening up his recorded archives to the band to take what they wanted for the cd. Leisner has spent nearly twenty years quietly recording a revolution and, in the process, amassing a wealth of informative, thought-provoking, and recordings from not only the likes of Zinn and Chomsky, but by folks on the frontlines of issues concerning education, gays and lesbians, children, nuclear arms, and foreign policy. After one listen to this unique release you will understand why Zinn took the call and enthusiastically put his name on a record with Resident Genius. "You Can't Blow Up A Social Relationship" is a defining achievement for this four-piece that started only two years ago with a handul of Pavement, Jim Carroll, and Screeching Weasel covers. The split CD comes out on Thick Records in July 2005. More music to come.

Hi, it's been a long time since I've heard from you. If you've posted a bulletin recently I probably missed it for all the "friendship trains" being posted on the bulletin boards. It seems the trains, and my lack of time to be on myspace, has the bulletin board buried in deep sh@t. So if you've posted and I missed it, please forgive me, and remember, I'll never miss a comment or a message. Unless Tom steals it, that is.
Nice Alternative Press review!
"Resident Genius' lo-fi indie-pop recalls the Elephant Six collective, while Zinn's speeches recall Noam Chomsky's early shit... An easily digestible -and catchy- lesson on foreign policy"
