There's something for everyone in The Rep's 2008–2009 season! Check out all of the shows in three series and three great theatre spaces, then put together a season subscription that's right for you.
The Rep presents six shows—musicals, comedies and dramas, contemporary and classic—on the Browning Mainstage of the Loretto-Hilto Center in Webster Groves. It's a big house but feels as intimate as a big living room, with no seat more than 20 rows from the unique thrust stage, so you're always close to the action. As St. Louis audiences have discovered for the past four decades, it's great theatre in a great theatre!
Frost/Nixon (September 3–28, 2008): David Frost’s 1977 interviews with Richard Nixon, following the Watergate scandal and the President’s humiliating resignation, drew the largest audience ever for television news. Could this British talk show host, with a playboy reputation and no known political convictions, be the one to elicit the apology the world awaited from the man at the center of one of America’s greatest political scandals? An Olivier, Tony Award and Drama Desk nominee for Best Play.
Jane Austen's Emma—A New Musical (October 8–November 2, 2008): Obsessed with romance but utterly clueless about her own feelings, Emma Woodhouse is one of literature’s most delightful heroines. When her matchmaking mischief invariably misfires, Emma must navigate the choppy course of true love with a generous heart as her only guide. Funny and fulfilling, Austen’s 19th century masterpiece comes to sparkling life in this charming new musical adaptation by the Tony Award-nominated composer of Broadway’s Jane Eyre.
This Wonderful Life (November 26–December 28, 2008): Ring the bells! Join Clarence the Angel, Old Man Potter, George, Mary and Zuzu Bailey and 20 more of Bedford Falls’ finest citizens in this visually stunning, unique one-man theatrical twist on Frank Capra’s timeless film. Bursting with hope and humor, wry observation and heartfelt homage, this must-see event will provide the perfect start to your family’s holiday festivities.
Saint Joan (January 7–February 1, 2009): A simple country girl who claims to hear divine voices and appears to produce miracles with ease declares her holy mission to drive the English from 15th century France and to crown the reluctant Dauphin as king. With staggering confidence and unshakable faith, she wages a battle that threatens the very fabric of society and the church, for which she will pay with her life. Shaw’s masterpiece of provocative political thinking is witty, tempestuous and potently dramatic.
The Miracle Worker (February 11–March 8, 2009): Blind, deaf and mostly mute, six-year-old Helen Keller was pitied and coddled by her family, so spoiled that she terrorized the household with tantrums and tricks. Then Anne Sullivan arrived, barely 20 years old, holding the key that would unlock the door between Helen and the world. This Tony Award-winning play is a lyrical, profoundly moving story of courage and communication, and a testament to the powerful influence of dedicated teachers.
Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (March 18–April 12, 2009): A brutal, mysterious figure has begun to haunt the London streets, committing murder under cloak of darkness, while respected Dr. Henry Jekyll displays increasingly alarming, erratic behavior. Jekyll’s friends confront the monstrous Mr. Hyde in an attempt to unlock the puzzles of this tortured soul, but only Hyde’s beautiful mistress may hold the solution. Stevenson’s tale of inner demons and evil unchecked is given thrilling new life in this intense, intimate and fiendishly clever adaptation.
In 2005, The Rep launched its edgy, provocative new Off-Ramp series to great acclaim from critics and audiences alike. In 2008, Off-Ramp offers two St. Louis premieres with extended runs, all performed at the Grandel Theatre in midtown St. Louis' Grand Center. With a thrust stage, seating on two levels and a central location, one of the city's best new theatre spaces is home to its hottest new performance series.
The Lieutenant of Inishmore (September 17–October 12, 2008): Monty Python meets Quentin Tarantino in this brazen and unapologetic, bitterly blood curdling and breathtakingly funny farce about Irish Republican Army enforcer ‘Mad Padraic’ and the one thing he loves more than anything else in the world, his little black cat. But on a lonely Inishmore island road, someone has run over Wee Thomas. Was it an accident? Padraic’s gonna want to know. Olivier Award winner for Best Comedy.
Note: May cause fits of laughter, awkward discomfort and uncontrollable urges to reveal the shocking ending. (Don’t.) Contains very adult language and situations, loud gunfire and extremely graphic scenes of violence and torture that some may find disturbing. (No cats were harmed in the creation of this play.)
The Little Dog Laughed (November 5–30, 2008): Ruthless Hollywood über-agent Diane is poised to land her handsome up-and-coming young client Mitchell the movie role of a lifetime, but she may have to push him back in the closet and everyone else in his life off a cliff to do it. This Tony Award-nominated outrageous and steamy comedy is a fast-paced, hilarious look at the world of celebrity and the down-and-dirty politics of show biz. Note: This production contains brief nudity.
A relaxed 125-seat "black box"-style space, the Emerson Studio Theatre of the Loretto-Hilton Center in Webster Groves offers both audience and artist a truly unique and challenging theatre experience. The stage and seating configuration may change with each show, but the plays are always engaging and lively, the acting exceptional and the production values superior. In other words, everything you'd expect from The Rep.
As usual, our three Studio shows will be announced in mid-summer, but orders may be placed now.
