The over-worked and underpaid...
About me: QuillBillies seeks the working class, blue-collar poet/writer--the poet who carries a pocket notebook in his or her apron at work, the essayist who shovels driveways or stands in line at a factory all day long, words bumping along the insides of her brain all day...We seek writers whose writing will not only excite us, but writers who live every day lives and who will share a slice of that with us.
However, that having been said, regardless of occupation, we want to hear from a DIVERSE population of writers, and we want writers who are willing to take risks.
We are looking to publish poetry, of both prose and lyrical variety, flash fiction and short, personal essays as well as short non-fiction pieces.
Also, a dramatic scene or monologue would be a nice addition to Quillbillies.
You can submit your work to: quillbillies@yahoo.com.
We are aiming to publish and distribute our first issue in January.
Talent is what they say
you have after the novel
is published and favorably
reviewed. Beforehand what
you have is a tedious
delusion, a hobby like knitting.
Work is what you have done
after the play is produced
and the audience claps.
Before that friends keep asking
when you are planning to go
out and get a job.
Genius is what they know you
had after the third volume
of remarkable poems. Earlier
they accuse you of withdrawing,
ask why you don't have a baby,
call you a bum.
The reason people want M.F.A.'s,
take workshops with fancy names
when all you can really
learn is a few techniques,
typing instructions and some-
body else's mannerisms
is that every artist lacks
a license to hang on the wall
like your optician, your vet
proving you may be a clumsy sadist
whose fillings fall into the stew
but you're certified a dentist.
The real writer is one
who really writes. Talent
is an invention like phlogiston
after the fact of fire.
Work is its own cure. You have to
like it better than being loved.

And the huge black lilies, flowers of shade and darkness, Opening their mournful calyxes against my mouth, Revealed to me my infamous and chaste dishonour, And descending alas into the horror of my being, I savored the strange, sweet happiness Of adoring myself after thinking I knew myself. - Jean Lorrain
It was pretty raucous . . . cost me $125 and my hand is bruised from opening beer bottles on the countertop. But all in all, good fun. You were missed!
