I am a professional philosopher whose academic specialty is the history of early modern philosophy. My Ph.D. is from the University of California at Berkeley; I also have degrees in philosophy from the University of Oxford and Amherst College.
I am an expert in online education, an active researcher, and an award-winning educator with significant expertise in faculty self-governance, institutional and program accreditation, academic policy, continuous quality improvement, strategic planning, faculty development, and the assessment of student learning.
I have served in numerous faculty leadership roles and perform accreditation work for the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association.
My wife Becky is an associate professor of English at McDaniel College in Westminster, MD, which is where we live and is where we raise our five-year-old daughter, Naomi. Becky and I enjoy competitive ballroom dancing, especially Latin dancing. My other interests include digital photography, science fiction, and public speaking.
