While growing up on the East Coast, Vandermost inherited some musical roots listening to groups like the Beatles and Wings. He says, “My mother would play albums like Abbey Road, Band on the Run and Rubber Soul, over and over and over… but at least it was good music.”
His family also lived throughout Europe giving him exposure to many forms and styles of music, which have greatly influenced his own songwriting. Later he found himself in Orange County where he joined several groups as a lead guitarist, including Greenwich Meantime and most recently, the George Fryer Combo.
As an indie artist, Vandermost took time to carefully execute his first solo project from start to finish. Overseeing every aspect, it was like giving birth and Automatic August was finally released in late June.
"Phil Vandermost is a new artist that should be very appealing to many with this light, airy approach to his brand of music – what is most interesting in the backdrop of his music is the incredibly tasty guitar which shows a strong inspiration from Texas tapmaster, Eric Johnson – so fans of his work, will want to check out Vandermost here.
More commercials leanings like Crowded House and Coldplay come into focus alongside the smooth, engaging melodies and high-soaring vocals. A most pleasant enjoyment to be had, throughout “Automatic August”.

Sure thing! Will do...but you are pushing it with 3 favors! hahaha! :) Sorry I missed the last show- was going to try to make it, but I will definitely be there on the 25th! I hope all is well and tell the family I said hello! :)
Yeah, we had a blast. You guys really looked after us and we finally got to see you play in a show. Not once but 3 TIMES!!! You have a beautiful gift in your music!!! Wishing you every success with the album!!
I enjoyed playing sax with you as well at Mahe's in Seal Beach. Your professionalism really shined! Listen, if you would ever like a sax player to sit in with your band sometime, let me know. I am a "free agent" now after recently departing 2 live cover bands to concentrate on studio work and putting my own original things together. So, just let me know via myspace if anything comes up. Thanks! Brian Grace
