PEOPLE KEEP IT ROUGH N’ ROCKING ON THEIR DAVE JERDEN-PRODUCED SELF-TITLED DEBUT
Turn on the radio nowadays, and you’ll notice that the majority of rock bands appear to be going after overly studio enhanced sounds – almost totally forgetting about what made many of rock’s previous notable acts great in the first place. Not People. Led by singer/guitarist/songwriter Jimmy Young, the Venice, California-based three-piece (which also includes bassist Matt Mcjunkins and drummer Matt O) succeeds in honing in on a sound that brings back the oh-so-fond days of when rock bands released albums that actually sounded like their live performance. And as evidenced throughout ‘People,’ the excitement and fury has been perfectly captured on tape by Dave Jerden (who has worked with such all-time greats as Jane’s Addiction and Alice in Chains).
“People’s raw, rocking sound doesn’t fit in with the current crop of studio enhanced rock,” admits Young. “Instead, it does everything to break down the barriers that have been created by the mass media to separate the listener from the artist. Dave Jerden wanted this band to be everything that was great about 1970’s rock with all the modern accoutrements. Which meant playing every part live and not cutting things to a grid or even a click track.” And as evidenced by the lead-off single, “The Kids,” as well as “Young Love” and “Too Cruel,” People certainly stick out from the over-crowed rock n’ roll pack. Jerden himself even agrees there is something special about the group. “I've made my share of records, but every once in a while a project comes along that is just plain fun to do. Working with People was not only fun but a creative experience for myself."
Already creating a buzz in California (including recent gigs at the Knitting Factory and the Viper Room), it’s bound to grow even louder coast to coast, as the trio will be making their east coast debut on February 13th at Don Hill’s in New York City, while the debut has just been made available via both iTunes and CDBaby.com. And it looks like it’s shaping up to be a very memorable rock union between producer and artist. “We’ve have started pre-production with Dave Jerden on our second record - scheduled for release some time in the fall of ’08. People plan to be at a festival near you this summer.” Don’t say you haven’t been officially warned.
