   About Paul Dunton & Guests

Welcome to An Evening With Paul Dunton & Guests at The Grey Lady, Tunbridge Wells

Paul Dunton is a uniquely talented singer/songwriter whose distinct vocal tones complement imaginative melodies & honest compelling lyrics. Contrasting tempos, themes and intriguing stories feature in Pauls songwriting which when fused together and expressed through his unusual line up of Piano/vocals, strings and flute the end result is a multitude of sweeping choral like arrangements laced with mood and ambience.

The revered Jazz venue "The Grey Lady Music Lounge" (located on the Pantiles, Tunbridge Wells) were so impressed with Pauls atmospheric pop/rock style they awarded him with a weekly residency, a first for a non jazz artist. Paul decided to share his residency by inviting 2-3 local acts each week to showcase a selection of their material providing a much needed platform for local original acoustic music of all genres. An Evening With Paul Dunton & Guests was born and continues to go from strength to strength and with great variety & exceptionable performers on display each week it is no wonder the Grey Lady is packed out week after week.

Paul's take on the subject:

"I was chuffed to bits to be offered a residency at such an esteemed venue that is The Grey Lady Music Lounge. Being strictly a jazz/blues venue I was delighted that The Grey Lady had decided to broaden their musical horizons, however what dawned on me was the fact that even if I were to write new songs every week it would be inevitable that after a while I would not be able to sustain peoples appetite for variety and the night would soon become stale. I realized that there is hardly anywhere that supports local acoustic original music within Tunbridge wells and the surrounding areas. You would have to travel to Brighton or London to find purpose built music venues that cater for original music. So I decided to share my residency by inviting 2-3 local original acts to perform a selection of their material.

"The night is set up by candlelight with professional sound technician and co resident singer/songwriter Ollie Nicholls monitoring levels for the duration. Every local act that is invited receives sizeable pre gig publicity via local radio/newspapers, in house press releases & posters and is featured on the Grey Lady website. A popular feature of the night with audiences and musicians alike is the Peoples choice where by each artist is required to prepare a list of 2-3 covers. That list is then duplicated to each member of the audience who in turn will then vote for the song they most want to hear performed. The song with the most votes is then performed by the artist in the latter part of their set. As a gesture for playing each guest act receives 20% of the door takings and one of the guest acts is given the headline slot. Local original acoustic music now has a presence in Tunbridge Wells and along with our friends at the Fishbowl in Lamberhurst we hope to have started the ball rolling..."

Doors open 7.30pm. Entry 4 pounds.

Train Of Thought is now available from HMV Tunbridge Wells!

Mr D!

Congratulations on outdoing Local and Live 07 - this year was even better and I know you worked your arse off to pull it together. Am glad you kept going, even when iot was really tough and you were frazzled because every one of us musicians and singer/songwriters owe 25-30 mins of our weekend to you for the chance to play in front of so many people in the Pantiles. You sir, are a star - a true gent in the murky world of music. Shine brightly Paul - we think the world of you, Chris

Dearest Olli,

How I did enjoy bumping into you on Mount Ephraim all the time, joking with you, your writing, your music, your comedy, your piano, your song with 9 Beatles titles in it, your dedication. May your soul dance like sunshine in our memories.

All my love and thoughts reach out to everyone you touched.

Unlike some, I only had the pleasure of knowing Ollie for a short while. The fact that I am so saddened by his passing is a testament to Ollie himself. The world has lost a thouroughly charming and decent man.

My heart goes out to all those who loved him, of whom there were obviously many. Mick

Ollie

You always had a smile on your face, a twinkle in your eye and you were one of the most chilled out geezers I ever had the pleasure to know.

Wherever you are now, I hope you've got your big pizza, your glass of wine and your smokes.

Love & peace

Ollie, it must be 10 years since I saw you last. I will always remember you as being generous, helpful, talented, intelligent, & with a wicked sense of humour. I'm so glad we got back in touch recently but it's a shame we didn't get to have those beers in town. Your last email was full of humour & encouraging words about my music. Generous to the last. I'm gutted :(

Ollie, it is a tragedy that you are no longer with us. It truly was a privilege to play in a band with such a talented musician and even more so to have you as a friend. I will miss you but will never forget your smile and the great times we shared. Mark.

Ollie,
I'm so shocked and sad, still don't quite believe you've gone.I really cherish knowing you for 9 years, and thankyou for your sweet kindness and for being a genius in the recording studio. As well as being the best sound engineer ever you were such a gifted song writer and musician. I love your songs, the words of 'Waterfall' are beautiful and prophetic-I'm so sorry you have flown. Be in peace.
Love and light, Helen
