Testimonials

"I am loving "Hands, Grooves & Fills". It is, by far, the most helpful instructional material I have used. It is taking my playing to the next level and I still have a ways to go with it.”
Marcus Jones

"I just bought your new DVD, Hands, Grooves, & Fills. Although I’m an experienced drummer, there were area’s I really needed help with. Your DVD has really given me some new inspiration and help. I think anyone, at any level could benefit form your DVD regardless of skill level. Great job and keep kicking a$$!!"
Pat Taylor

"I got your new Book/DVD/CD. There are a lot of great things on it that I find very useful. I think it’s a great idea to include an MP3 CD with the tracks, so people can play along with music instead of just reading it off of paper."
Tom O'Hara

"What an amazing gift you have given to drummers everywhere. This is the first time I have seen these licks de-mystified and made relevant to the kit. I have heard several of these types of licks on CD and could never begin to penetrate the stickings. Thank you so much."
Tom Smyrna

The P4 Practice Pad!

Press Release
World class drummer and clinician Pat Petrillo has revolutionized the drum pad market with the P4. This unique practice pad offers four different surfaces for a variety of sounds and feels on the same side, PLUS, there are 3 different levels for independent hand movements.
With the P4 Practice Pad, each surface has a different rubber for unique feels and sounds, and the levels help develop hand coordination and creativity.

• The bottom level is a specially designed rubber that feels very natural, not too bouncy.

• The middle level has a harder neoprene rubber, plus a softer, grey rubber for less bounce.

• The top level has a hard red rubber, similar to the feel of a ride cymbal.

Work your ride, high hat, or cascara pattern on the top pad, and use the lower levels to practice various snare and tom orchestrations. Or for an extra workout, use the soft pad for less rebound. Playing singles from the top level to the bottom level is real workout. It's versatile, practical, and makes practice FUN! You'll dig the different sounds each pad produces, and it's like playing a mini drum set.

Quotes from Pat

"What makes the P4 Practice Pad Different ? Just take a look!"

"I invented the P4 Practice Pad because I wanted to feel like I was moving around a drumset when I was working out on a pad. I couldn’t achieve that with any other pad. They were all the same."

"Now with the P4, I can work on independent techniques by moving my right hand to the top pad to practice ride or high hat patterns, while keeping my left hand on the bottom pad for snare ghost note work. The middle pads serve as toms, so I can practice sticking combinations. You can really feel the difference when playing single strokes from the top level down to the bottom level!"

"Students have found that after they practice on the P4, it’s a drag to go back to a 'normal' practice pad! It’s beneficial for coordination, it’s educational, PLUS, it makes practicing FUN!"

SO…Take YOUR Practice to a NEW LEVEL!

His versatility extends to Broadway, having played many shows over the years, including "A Chorus Line", "Grease", "Footloose", and "Dreamgirls". Pat has also performed/recorded with:

Glen Burtnick

Lincoln Goins

Musical Journey

Growing up in New Brunswick, New Jersey in a culturally diverse neighborhood, Pat started playing at age five. It was obvious at this early age, Pat had a gift for music. With the help of an older brother, he began playing along to music of the Beatles. As he got older, Pat's musical influences began to include James Brown, Parliament/Funkadelic, Yes, Earth, Wind, and Fire, Stevie Wonder, and anything that was on the radio. By his teenage years he was drawn to fusion music Weather Report, Spyro Gyra, Chick Corea, and Return to Forever. This melting pot of music helped shape the drummer that he is today.

Education

Pat honed his hand technique and chops with the popular Bayonne Bridgemen Drum and Bugle Corps, where he was a snare drummer/section leader. They won many DCI drumline championships in the 80’s, touring the country. After receiving a scholarship to Morehead Sate University in Kentucky, he studied with Frank Oddis, receiving Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Music Education. Here he was a member of the Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Lab Bands, and Jazz Vocal Ensemble. This really helped shape and refine his musicality. Upon his return to New Jersey, Pat enrolled at Drummers Collective in NYC, studying with the likes of Peter Erskine and Frank Malabe.

Teaching and Clinics

As a popular clinician and educator, he has performed clinics at many events, including at PASIC, numerous universities, as well as drum shops and music stores around the world. His Multi - Media instructional package, “Hands, Grooves, & Fills” (Hudson Limited/Hal Leonard), is a DVD/Book/MP3 Play Along CD, which has received international acclaim for it’s methods for improving hand technique, groove ideas, and fill vocabulary.

The Collective

Pat is one of only 2 Full Time Faculty members at Drummers Collective in New York City, the world's premier Rhythm Section School, which is accredited by NASM. He is involved in every aspect of the curriculum, from Reading classes and Rudiments, to U.S Roots, Soul, & Funk'R&B classes, Rhythm Section classes, Music Business/Life Skills classes, and of course private lessons. In lessons, he concentrates on developing hand technique, groove coordination, "grooveology" (historical grooves of the past), and fill & soloing techniques. He has also written “The Roots of Groove: R&B/Soul & Contemporary Funk Styles for the Drums” (Carl Fischer), a curriculum which explores numerous sub genres of groove music. This book is used as part of The Collective Style Series classes.
