Hi everyone. I learned to play the didjeridu on my own in 1994, here in Turin, while having a strong feeling of loneliness and isolation as it was impossible to get clues or people helping me in how to go ahead. It got me after watching an Aboriginal Group performance where the didjeridu accompanied traditional songs and dances. Caught by the sound of this instrument I went closer to the stage to watch which technique the musician was actually using. I could not guess what was happening to me: the seed of my new life. My work as copywriter and my agency became increasingly a memory fading away since then. All occurred thanks to a inner guide which took me into this wonderful world. To me playing the didjeridu does not only mean to produce sounds within rhythmical patterns, but also to get in touch with my deepest sides, these arising only in particular moments. I reach my inner spaces with the didje and I catch my creativity there. My advice is then to technically learn how to play the instrument and then leave it for your own expression when you feel loose with it. First of all my thanks go to the Aboriginal People from which this instrument comes and who find it hard to get back to their dignity. The fact that many white people play the didjeridu today is not happily welcome by all the Aboriginal People. But it is tremendously crucial to split who masters this research and plays his own music without stealing anything from its original and sacred culture. Similar instruments are played in some parts of the world with quite different techniques and inspiration. Play it if you like it but do it in you personal way, spontaneously and musically.

Ciao a tutti, ho imparato a suonare il didjeridu nel 1994 da solo, a Torino, con una forte sensazione di solitudine e di isolamento per l'impossibilità di reperire informazioni o persone che mi indicassero come fare. Successe dopo avere assistito a una rappresentazione di un gruppo aborigeno dove il didjeridu accompagnava canti e danze tradizionali. Rapito dal suono dello strumento mi avvicinai al palco e rimasi per tutta la durata della rappresentazione a osservare la tecnica che il suonatore utilizzava. Non potevo immaginare cosa stesse succedendo: si stava instaurando in me l'embrione del mio nuovo vivere. Da quel momento il lavoro di pubblicitario, la mia agenzia, le consulenze presero via via la forma di un ricordo che sbiadisce col tempo. Tutto è avvenuto grazie a una guida interiore che mi ha condotto in questo fantastico mondo. Per me suonare il didjeridu non significa solo emettere dei suoni entro schemi ritmici, ma entrare in contatto anche con quegli aspetti miei più profondi che soltanto in momenti di particolare intensità riesco a raggiungere. Con il didje vado nei miei spazi interiori e attingo in modo intuitivo dall'infinita creatività che vi dimora. Il mio consiglio quindi è di imparare tecnicamente a suonare lo strumento e poi, quando si è disinvolti nella tecnica, abbandonarla per trovare la vera espressione personale. Il mio ringraziamento principale va innanzitutto al popolo aborigeno da cui proviene lo strumento. Il fatto che molti "bianchi" oggi suonino il didjeridu non è accolto felicemente da tutti gli aborigeni, ma è importantissimo distinguere chi riesce nella sua ricerca e ne fa un uso musicale senza nulla "prendere" dalla cultura originaria e sacra. Tra l'altro esistono strumenti simili suonati in più parti del mondo con modi e ispirazioni diversi. Suonate questo strumento se vi aggrada ma fatelo con il vostro bagaglio personale di spontaneità e musicalità.

My research with didjeridu has led me to meet and share "sound" experiences with: the Aboriginal player Mark Atkins; the Swedish player Lars Wallin with whom I supported the traditional Aboriginal group White Cockatoo; the Australian Aboriginal group Wadumbah which I accompanied along their Italian tour; the Tibetan Monks and their long metal trumpets met in various events; the "Fana" wirling Dervish ensemble with which I played a couple of times while they were performing their trance dance; the Indian tabla player Nihar Mehta guest in my atelier; the Australian virtuous guitar player Tommy Emanuel with whom I played at the Australian Consulate in Milan.

I was together with the Music Opera dedicated to Pope John Paul II directed by Maestro Salvatore Accardo with the Italian Chamber Orchestra and the music Ensemble of the Arsenale della Pace, Turin Sermig Auditorium.
