Only Living Boy eats raw hearts for breakfast. Fueled by life’s stunning brokenness, the band’s distinct rock sound offers listeners an authentic and poignant experience. The trio’s unrivaled style is a combination of psych rock inherited from their parents’ vinyl and the alternative rock of their own MTV adolescence, woven together with threads of jam, blues, reggae and punk. Thanks to its hometown’s suspension between the woods of Pennsylvania and the concrete of New York City, Only Living Boy’s northwestern New Jersey roots help define its sound and attitude—organic with an edge.
Lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter Joe Cirotti , drummer Trevor Newcomb and bassist Eric Curley have played together in different incarnations since prepubescent basement jams. In 2005, they united as Rabid Roy, playing hundreds of gigs throughout New Jersey and New York. Known for its rousing live shows, the trio has shared bills with bands including former Sheryl Crow guitarist and cowriter Todd Wolfe (Easton, PA), The Milwaukees (Jersey City, NJ), April Smith (Brooklyn, NY), Lionize (Silver Spring, MD), Hero Pattern (Rockaway, NJ), The Loft (Nashville, TN) and The Midgetmen (Austin, TX) at venues such as The Knitting Factory (NYC), The Stone Pony (Asbury Park, NJ), CBGB (NYC), The Saint (Asbury Park, NJ), The Fire (Philadelphia), Mexicali Blues (Teaneck, NJ), Sin-é (NYC), The Mill Hill Saloon (Trenton, NJ) and Clash Bar (Clifton, NJ).
In 2008, the band reinvented itself as Only Living Boy, named after Simon & Garfunkel’s 1970 song “The Only Living Boy in New York.” The change represented a significant shift in attitude, songwriting and musicianship. With newfound motivation and an evolved sound, Only Living Boy immediately started to record its insightful and provocative self-titled album, which debuted August 16, 2008.
