Who I'd like to meet:
Theatre and forensics students.
We may travel to Lake Superior State University in Oct. of 2008 to participate in their Festival.
I'm also looking for people to help me with our performance festival in February.
(These are also found under the URL links.)
At forensics competitions, there are a number of events to pick from:
DRAMATIC INTERPRETATION (DI) – This event must use material from the stage, screen or radio. The performer can represent one or more characters and must use a manuscript. Maximum time limit – 10 minutes, including an original introduction
PROGRAMMED ORAL INTERPRETATION (POI) – -- A program of thematically linked selections of literary merit chosen from at least two of three recognized genres of competitive interpretation (prose, poetry, drama),. A substantial portion of time must be devoted to each of the genres used in the program. Manuscripts required. Time limit = 10 minutes, including an original introduction and/or transitions.
DRAMATIC DUO – - Two people wi
ll present a cutting from a play involving the portrayal of two or more characters. No props, costumes, lighting, etc. are to be used. The focus of the presentation should be off-stage, and the time limit is ten minutes maximum. Symbolic movement or staging is allowed.
PROSE – - Each contestant is to prepare and deliver one selection of prose. (Plays are not eligible.) If more than one selection is used, original transitions should be used as needed. Limited movement is acceptable and the time limit is ten minutes, including introductions. Manuscripts required.
POETRY – - Each contestant is to prepare and deliver one or more selections of poetry. Each program is to have an original introduction, transitions if necessary, and if multiple selections are used, they should center on a unifying theme. Time limit is ten minutes. Manuscripts required.
PERSUASION – - Each contestant will present an original speech to convince, to move to action, or to inspire on a significant issue. All materials shall be documented and oral footnotes will be used. Time limit is ten minutes maximum.
INFORMATIVE – - Each contestant will deliver an original, factual speech to fulfill the general purpose of informing the audience. Visuals may or may not be used to supplement and/or reinforce the message. The speech should be delivered from memory. Time limit is ten minutes maximum.
AFTER DINNER SPEAKING – - Each contestant is to prepare an original speech whose purpose is to make a serious point through the use of humor. The presentation should not be a string of jokes, but an organized developed speech. Props are permitted, but should enhance the content and not be a substitute for it. It must be delivered from memory and the time limit is ten minutes.
IMPROMPTU – - Each contestant will receive quotations of a general nature and will have seven minutes to divide between preparation and speaking. It is suggested that the contestant's speaking time be at least three minutes.
