They say they are astral travelers, but these rockers from Olympia, WA, cite influences rooted deep in Hawkwind, Amon Duul II, Velvet Underground, and the MC5, and serve up their singular vision of rhythm and heat through a driving brand of psychedelic rock'n'roll.
Formed in 2004 and consisting of Dave Harvey (Tight Bros From Way Back When) on guitar, vocals, harmonica and occasional flute and sitar, Grant Miller on guitar, Quitty (Tight Bro's From Way Back When) on bass and vocals, and Eryn Ross (Growing) on drums, the group has shown an intense dedication to their craft on a couple of self-released cd's and some West Coast and national touring. Whether listening to these recordings or experiencing it live, a focused yet multifaceted sound shines forth in songs such as the blistering Now I'm Resting, a straight ahead, short rocker that snaps into place with the throttling pulse of two guitars and a bass riff that gives a well measured and linear bounce to the frenzied and kaleidoscopic guitar work. Vocals soar, scream, and filter out into broken harmonies that dissipate into shakers and guitar leads, all washed over a very solid, driving back beat of drums, nicely demonstrating the interplay between the song and the sonics that Nudity is working with. Other songs showcase the groups prowess at stretching out into psychic group-interplay territory, with full-fledged sonic freakouts, conga and tambourine-infused breakdowns, and sets featuring sitar and a guest flautist that build piece by piece from simple drones to relentless all-out thundering grooves. The musicians plainly possess a sense of musical responsiveness to each other not often found outside of jazz. And even while Nudity's songs plummet into digressions of exploding, swelling, and whooshing guitars, the tangents seem to be the destination - each expands and contracts in the most exciting ways, but retains the economy of proficient craftsmanship.
Nudity is bent on making some of the most sonic and insane bionic boogie to come out of the Northwest in a while. Their live shows reflect all this and more, the colors of their lighting and clothing reflecting and intensifying the electric hues leaping from amplifiers and drums. They plan on keeping up a steady touring schedule and will soon realize their sound and direction on a couple of vinyl/cd outings that should at last capture the full dimension of their far-out, galactic raw power.
