North by Northwest nasce nel 1999 con una fisionomia molto diversa da quella odierna: Andrea Carletti (1986), Federico Forleo (1985) e Federico "Tigre" Giorgi (1986) muovono i loro primi passi come trio (chitarra-batteria-basso) nei Metaversus dedicandosi alla riproposizione di cover grunge-punk-rock.

Nel 2003 i tre decidono di dedicarsi a materiale originale attraverso vie diverse: Tigre raggiunge alla chitarra i suoi amici Ritorno alle Origini (già Terzo Grado), mentre Andrea e Federico (che abbandona la batteria per la chitarra) continuano a collaborare insieme. Il primo a raggiungere i due è il batterista Eugenio Frasca (1987) nel settembre del 2003, seguito, dopo aver alternato vari bassisti, da Dario Khan (1987) nel 2005.

E' con questa formazione che il progetto prende il nome di North by Northwest. I quattro lavorano sui primi brani, proposti per lo più da Federico, si esibiscono in vari concerti e all'inizio del 2006 decidono di registrare il tutto in un demo che vede la luce nel novembre dello stesso anno: tutto (a parte la batteria) viene registrato nelle loro case e viene missato con l'aiuto di Maurizio Mancini, già bassista dell'hard-rock band romana Jailbreak nella quale milita anche Andrea dal 2002.
Il brano The Long Goodbye, contenuto nel demo, viene inserito nella compilation "The best of Indies in Italy" (Audiocoop).

Sempre nel 2006 Dario si trasferisce a Londra per studiare: viene invitato nuovamente nel gruppo Tigre che aveva da poco concluso l'esperienza nel Ritorno alle Origini (nel quale aveva militato per circa un anno anche Federico alla batteria).

Nel gennaio 2008 i North by Northwest si separano da Eugenio Frasca. Al suo posto subentra in maggio Fabio Luppi (1982), già con Movengo e Lo Zoo di Berlino.
I quattro sono pronti per la registrazione del loro nuovo lavoro.

North by Northwest came to life in 1999, looking completely different from what the band is now: Andrea Carletti (1986, guitar and vocals), Federico Forleo (1985, drums) and Federico "Tigre" Giorgi (1986, bass) began playing together as a trio in Metaversus, a grunge-punk-rock coverband.

In 2003 they got stuck with covers and started playing original material in different bands: Tigre joined his friends Ritorno alle Origini (previously known as Terzo Grado) as a guitar player, while Andrea and Federico (who switched from drums to guitar) kept on playing together. Drummer Eugenio Frasca (1987) joined in September 2003 and bass player Dario Khan (1987) joined in 2005.

This is the birth of North by Northwest. They begin working on some songs, mostly written by Federico, and make their first live appearances. In the first months of 2006 they start recording their first demo, finally completed in November: everything except for drums is recorded in their houses and the demo is mixed with the help of Maurizio Mancini, the bass player of Jailbreak, a hard rock band in which Andrea plays guitar since 2002.
Their song The Long Goodbye is part of the compilation "The best of Indies in Italy" (Audiocoop).

In 2006 Dario moves to London to continue his studies: Tigre, who had previously left Ritorno alle Origini (Federico had also been their drummer for a year), joins back the band.

In January 2008 North by Northwest part ways with Eugenio Frasca. In May 2008 Fabio Luppi (1982), previously with Movengo and Lo Zoo di Berlino, joins the band as their new drummer.
The band is ready to work on a new record.
