Los Angeles-based band Mothers of Gut offer a sprawling, cerebral blend of psychedelia and Krautrock-influenced experimental rock.
The group, led by singer and multi-instrumentalist Aaron Freeman, formed in 2007 and employed a rotating lineup of musicians before solidifying in 2010 with guitarist William Davies (Duhkha), keyboardist/effects manipulator Kristina Collantes, bassist Ryan Bergman (Duhkha), and drummer Dave Gasper (Narwhal Party). Inanimate Sermon, written and recorded in 2009 and released the following spring, was the band’s full-length debut. Life stepped in in 2010 as Freeman’s father succumbed to cancer, and the raw emotion it evoked in him helped inspire Mothers' sophomore effort, Unking, which arrived on Family Time in spring 2011. ~ Chrysta Cherrie
