BIO: Formed in 1996 in London by Malcolm Cross. The name is actually a reference to his childhood hero, West Coast jazz drummer Joe Morello. The band was a mainstay of London's Acid Jazz scene, resulting in debut recording 'Jackpot' (1998 CDV Music.) A lifelong dream was realised when Mal relocated to Los Angeles, California with the UK band Minibar; U.S. debut 'minimal' (2003 self release) documents his new home and friends made there. The song 'Too Sweet' from that album was ultimately featured on Focus Feature's 'Something New' Original Movie Soundtrack (2006 Lakeshore Records) whilst 'Turnaround' and 'Be a Leader' also found new homes (on Pete Yorn's 'Trampoline Records Greatest Hits Vol.2' and MTV's 'Road Rules Extreme' Soundtrack respectively.) Morello's latest album 'Handheld' (2007 self release) is a musical tribute to the early '80's synth-pop heroes of Mal's mispent youth - Prince, Giorgio Moroder and Yellow Magic Orchestra..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................About 'minimal':+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++"...Bounds with hyperactive fun...brimming with irresistable melody and the true flavor of L.A." (Corey Levitan, 'Rave!')++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++"An infectious romp through California's magnificent musical memoirs, still managing to sound wildly Right Now." (Pamela des Barres)++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++"A real damn good album that you need to discover right away." (Par Winberg, Melodic.net)++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++"A quirky, thoroughly enjoyable romp through the City of Angels." (Heather Browne, Blog 'I am Fuel, You are Friends' )
In the worlds before monkey, primal chaos reigned. Heavens sought order, but the phoenix can fly only when its feathers are grown. The four worlds formed again and yet again, as endless eons whiled and passed. Time and the pure essences of heaven, the moisture of earth, the powers of the sun and the moon, all worked upon a certain rock old as creation, and it became magically fertile. That first egg was named Thought. The father Buda said “with our thoughts, we make the world.” Elemental forces caused the egg to hatch. From it then came a stone monkey. The nature of monkey was irreplaceable.
So I was having a very deep conversation with my mother, and we both agree that you should sing a Christmas song and put it on your page, so I can have it on mine.
sir morello...fantastic playing as always last night! The piano playing in the smoking lounge was truly lovely. Ok, morello on the LA440 webcast. I want it to happen!!!! I'm going to make sure you and David connect.
Holy Moley, Sounds like a great bash. Ryan Adams and the Cardinals played in Cardiff last night,it was a really great gig. He sold the place out-twas a 2000 seater. I had no idea he had such a profile over here. Good band, although you'd defiantely have smoked the drummer! Are you staing in LA for Christmas? JT
happy firework night Mal. Are you celebrating in LALA land? What are you up to at the moment? I've just got the studio sorted and am writing some music for Welsh TV Doc. Hoping to get back on the giging trail before too long tho. Rock on JT
