Miguel “Rulos” Martinez, also known as Mike Rolling, is a young saxophone player from Lugo (Spain) who has been playing continuously in the Spanish scene for 20 years yet.
He started his musical training as a child at Lugo’s conservatory and at the former school of the town’s council band.
He is a music teacher qualified by the University of Santiago de Compostela and is about to finish his degree in Musicology at the University of Salamanca. Specialized in woodwind, he also has taken jazz, improvisation and singing courses, as well as guitar, piano and percussion lessons.
He plays mostly tenor sax, often combining it with other wind instruments, as flutes or clarinets, apart from instruments made up by him.
He has collaborated with over 50 bands of very different styles, from folk, ancient and classical music to pop, rock, jazz and all the imaginable mixtures. Among his work with these bands, some stand out:
-La Escalera de Jacob. Promotion work for the Altas horas CD, playing regularly before several thousands of people, like in the case of the Spanish Top 40 radio stations concert, performing as a support act for some of the most important pop bands in Spain.
-Mundanal. Band that officially promoted Santiago’s holy year (Xacobeo 1999).
-Zootropo. Funk group with which he recorded a long play album and took part in two compilations, toured Northwest and central Spain and won four important prizes.
-Kozmic Muffin. Legendary international progressive rock band with which he worked on several projects that combined music and theatre, as well as soundtracks for short films, plays and other audio-visual media. Some of this works are published in limited editions.
-Holywater. Long-run rock band from Lugo. He recorded with them one track on their debut album, Handle With Care. He still works with them, at this time he is helping them to promote their second album, entitled Sides.
-nTn. Electronic music band linked to the musical and cultural colective “NoiteTRASNOite”.
-Safari Orquestra. A project currently touring the Galicia region in Northwest Spain. It will publish this year a long play album.
We should mention as well his collaboration with some other Galician bands, like Disappointment (old school hardcore), El Kiki (flamenco), Alesandi (Lugo’s first ever rock and roll band, which started in 1966) or El Puto Koke (hip hop).
Outside Galicia, he has been part of several big bands, like the one of the University of Salamanca, and various groups of Balcanic music, jazz and bossa nova, as Dandounbico.
In the last years he could be seen continuously at the Galician regional television, playing (always live) in the bands of different programs, as the very popular Luar, in which he played in a traditional music band as accompaniment for the weekly contest “Vai de baile”. This band has just published a compilation of the themes played at that program.
He regularly takes part in many audio-visual, theatral and plastic arts projects, offering his music as a soundrack for the visual language.
Outstanding among his last musical projects, we can mention the next launching of the band Leucochloridium, in which he practices sound experimentation, as well as the launching and promotion of the first album by the group Telémaco, Outótono, in which he works with the genial Spanish DJ Dr.Think.
