Michèle Gingras is Professor of Clarinet at Miami University (Ohio). She
joined the faculty in 1986, and was named Hays Crossen Curry Distinguished
Educator in 2002 and Distinguished Scholar of the Graduate School in 2005.
She earned her M.M. at Northwestern University with Robert Marcellus, a
Premier Prix in clarinet performance and in chamber music from the Montreal
Music Conservatory with Rafaele Masella, and she studied in the doctoral
program at Indiana University with Bernard Portnoy and Earl Bates.
Professor Gingras is an active recitalist, author, recording artist, and
clinician. She performed as a soloist, as a member of the Miami Wind
Quintet, and as a klezmer musician in Australia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Taiwan,
Singapore, and throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe. She served ten
summers as Principal clarinetist with the Echternach Festival Orchestra in
Luxembourg. Previously, she was Principal Solo Clarinet with the Santiago
Philharmonic Orchestra (Chile). As a concerto soloist, she performed several
works by contemporary composers, including Malcolm Arnold’s Concerto no. 2
with Sir Malcolm present.
Gingras recorded a dozen compact discs and ten solo recitals for
Radio-Canada. Additionally, she recorded a commissioned duo with Emmy-Award
clarinetist Richard Stoltzman for MMC Recordings in Boston (2008).
Her publications include over 150 articles and reviews for The Clarinet,
CASS, Australian Clarinet and Saxophone, The Instrumentalist, NACWAPI,
Canadian Winds, and other magazines, a 550-page scholarly book translation
published by Roncorp, and her book Clarinet Secrets‹52 Performance
Strategies for the Advanced Clarinetist was published by Scarecrow Press in
2004 (Revised Edition, 2006). In 2007, she published a widely distributed
“Gear Guide” pamphlet about single reed instrument care as well as online
educational material for Rico International. In 2008, she started writing a
clarinet advice column in the magazine Australian Clarinet and Saxophone.
She was a Visiting Artist and Instructor at the Luxembourg Conservatory, the
Oslo Music Academy (Norway), the Elder Conservatorium (Australia), Indiana
University (Bloomington) the Guayaquil Symphony (Ecuador), and taught
numerous master classes worldwide. She was the main guest artist for the
Annual Clarinet Day at Arizona State University and the University of
Central Florida in Orlando.
Michele Gingras served on the Board of Directors of the International
Clarinet Association (ICA) as Secretary, directed the ICA Composition
Competition for nine years, and performed for twelve ICA conferences.
Michele Gingras is an Artist/Clinician for Buffet Crampon USA and Rico International.
Professor Gingras’ past and present research includes period clarinets, wind
synthesizers, the tarogato (Hungarian folk instrument), klezmer (Jewish folk
music), work ethics and job retention for musicians, performance anxiety,
teaching with technology, and most recently, virtual reality environments.
She is included in scholarly monographs such as The Encyclopedia of Music in
Canada, The Essential Klezmer by Seth Rogovoy, and New Directions for
Clarinet by Phillip Rehfeldt.
