About me:
I was born in Doncaster too long ago to remember. My first recollection was of a glow in the night sky, the result of a successful Luftwaffe air raid when bombing civilians as they lay abed was perfectly normal. Poverty was a virtue. A job in a coal mine was assured because my grandfather and about fifteen of his brothers fired the shots in our local pit. But fate intervened.
My father didn’t return from the war. Listed ‘missing believed killed’ in Italy, I believe he just went missing. His name is on a marble slab in the shadow of the Benedictine monastery that adorns Monte Cassino. The monastery became famous internationally after we bombed it to smithereens. We at least paid to have it restored, which means that the Germans still owe us for a chip shop.
Mother remarried and my stepfather turned out to be a businessman. Instead of neglecting my education and going to work down the pit, I neglected my education and worked for him. He was an entrepreneurial man. He started several businesses, finishing none. I had many jobs, a trend I followed for most of my life.
This erratic lifestyle caused me to believe that experience meant everything. It also caused my divorce and, out of desperation, led me into the trap of becoming a writer.
I became a writer soon after I moved to the Netherlands and out came a book, a novel. It's called Watch Out for the Bulls and it deals with serious issues in a lighthearted (manic) way. Dutch cheese gets a mention and I think that's a first. If you believe in death it's an important book because it offers a definitive guide to the Afterlife. If you are interested in improving your prospects for a decent Afterlife the book can be bought on-line at michaeldawkes.com
I do a bit of blogging but only because it's environmentally friendly.
