Michael Brunnock - "So I Do"
By Pete Olshansky
"How do I explain my awkwardness?" Michael Brunnock sings on 'Shine,' a track from his solo debut album "So I Do." But there is nothing awkward about the album. 'Acoustic,' 'folk,' and 'Irish' are all words that have been used to describe Michael's music and while not necessarily wrong, they hardly scratch the surface of describing what is truly a fresh and unique album. From the moment the drums kick in on the opening track, music lovers will know that they are listening to something special.
Swirling banjos, acoustic guitar and lush strings lay the framework for the album, while Michael's vocals vacillate between delicate and assertive. In spite of of the instrumentation, "So I Do" isn't what one would call 'world music.' Nevertheless Michael's Irish heritage does creep out on tracks like "Fallen Leaves" and "Born Again" which feature fiddles that will make you swear you've just arrived in Dublin. The latter, a foot-thumping lyrical manifesto that criticizes organized religion, is so charged with energy that to call it impressive would just be lazy. Another track, "Man Overboard" (which features Jenna Nicholls on backing vocals) is so well crafted that its hook will undoubtedly get stuck in your head after one listen.
Having been the former frontman of the bands "The Van Winkles" and "Little Palace," Michael is no stranger on the scene. He definitely comes into his own on this disc though, showing a tremendous amount of growth as a musician. "So I Do" is exceptional, for sure. Awkward? Anything but.

For those who have watched the Irish music scene, Michael Brunnock, is recognized as a quiet man, who's made a big impact. A native of Ireland's, County Meath, (Pronounced Mead), he rose through the burgeoning ranks, fronting bands like “Little Palace” and “The Van Winkles”, each becoming the darlings of the Irish music press in the early to late 90's and following years.
Now a New York resident and live favorite in the East Village, Michael is set to release a brand new album “.........” hot on the heels of last years well received, Budweiser sponsored, “Live at The Red Lion.”
An illustration of the reverance Michael Brunnock projects elict, shows in this quote, “...one of the strongest debut singles I've heard from any band, Irish or otherwise.”
Taken from Hot Press Magazine, Ireland's premier music journal, on the release of “Beekeeper.” a song about his past life as a mathematics teacher.
Brunnock remembers clearly, the defining moment as a child, that set him on the path to a musical career. In his family's often packed kitchen, in front of an open fire at night, all assembled, were captivated by his 90-year-old grandfather (who’s name incidentally was Michael Brunnock) singing local ballads chronicling the heroics of Irish rebels during the Irish war of independence and before. The lofty goal of recreating such an energy took seed firmly with the youngest Michael Brunnock...
From here, influences as varied as Elvis, Planxty(Traditional Irish supergroup), Neil Young, GillianWelch, Dead Can Dance and AC/DC, have shaped Michael's earnest intelligence, into a mesmirizing body of work to date.
Comparisons to Neil Young and Cold Play are made, and may loosely describe his contempory acoustic folk-rock sound, but his themes are drawn from lifes paradoxes; conscience vs consiousness and internal beauty vs external image . The songs and particularly live performances, are very much his own.
Hey Michael Brunnock, Thanks for the friendship! How are things in New York? It's finally Summer here in Milwaukee as the earth has completed its seasonal shift on its axis. I saw you were a friend of Deepak Chopra's, so I thought you might be interested in a new healthy Ayurvedic beverage and ground floor home-based business he's endorsing called Zrii, which features the healing Amalaki fruit from the Himalayas. I hope this finds you well. Have a great week! Wishing you peace, love, and prosperity, Paul Kuhn Cellocaster, Violin, Vocals, Zrii Milwaukee via Aspen via D.C. Dear Irish friends and friends of Europe, I am a citizen of a EU member state. In my country, we have not been allowed to vote on the future of Europe. You, our friends in Ireland, alone have this right and are called to vote on the "Lisbon Treaty" on June 12th.
I reject this Treaty as undemocratic in conception and in content. Please, vote NO on this Treaty for me as a first step to building a common social, ecological, democratic and peaceful Europe.
best of luck on friday in bewleys, michael, the last time was excellent, cant make it due to a family thing but wanted to say the album is an inspiration to writers, dreamers and believers alike...
