    MatGB's Interests
GeneralI love reading, I'm a news junky, I love decent films but don't watch enough. I'm an internet addict, and spend far too much time reading blogs and journals. I moved to London in early 2007, and am doing the best I can to explore the cheaper things you can do; my new job isn't exactly well paid. In the meantime, news, politics, history, cultural news and what "the next big thing" online will be all interest me. But mostly I spend my time reading Sci-fi and reading/writing blogs.
MusicWith rocks in. OK, a Pratchett reference had to come in somewhere. Eclectic, but a preference for real musicians, not really into bleepy shit (although some is OK).

Favourite bands would be Therapy¿, NiN and The Dead Kennedys. Sort of. Except I mostly listen to Chumbawamba, Ultraviolence and Bauhaus. Oh, and Carl Orff, Pink Floyd, Elastica and Radiohead. Did I mention Blur? Bo Diddley was cool, I really like Pulp, and Ministry gets played a bit. Meh, I even own some Ice T...
MoviesCitizen Kane, Serenity, H2G2, Cube, LotR, Clockwork Orange, Rocky Horror, Pirates I (not seen II yet), Crouching Tiger, everything by David Lynch (including Dune, it's OTT gothic sci-fi, and I saw it before I read the book, which probably helped), Clerks, Mallrats, Monty Python, The Lost Boys... Um, I like film, so I'll just stop there. Don't watch much these days, but that's apathy, money and, well, see below.
TelevisionNone. Seriously. I don't watch TV. I own one, but it's not plugged into the ariel, it's in the bedroom attached to a DVD player. That's it.

I buy DVDs for series I like. Firefly, Doctor Who, Dark Angel, Angel and I ought to have got around to buying BTVS by now, but haven't.
BooksLots. Really, lots. Mostly Sci-Fi, history, politics or current affairs.

I really like New Weird/Slipstream stuff, especially China Miéville and Steph Swaiston. Lots of 'hard' SF, especially Iain M. Banks, Charlie Stross and similar. Quite like Neil Gaiman and GRRM. Far too many pulpy Star Wars/Warhammer tie in novels, but they're silly. History books, especially the Thirty Years War, American Civil War or development of Europe and the nation-state system. But also Japan, 20thC Spain, the English Revolutions, John Stuart Mill and John Rawls. Oh, and maps as well.
HeroesSamy.

Oh, alright then. The Great Liberals; Mill, Churchill, Lloyd George, Ashdown, Beveridge. Keynes, to a lesser extent, as although discredited, he had great vision and it worked for longer than it should; besides, "in the long run, we all die" is a money quote worth savouring.

Beyond that, don't really do heroes; not a fan of the "great statesman" model of history/IR, much closer to the Marxian analysis about economic forces and the wisdom of crowds.

Actually, add another one. Jarvis Cocker. Not just for being great, but also for really winding up Micheal Jackson. Which is cool.

About me:
I'm Mat. I don't use MySpace much, I log in a few times a week to check messages and similar, but mostly I use sites that actually do stuff I find useful. If you actually know me, I strongly recommend using Facebook or Livejournal as a better network and a better blogging platform respectively. There's a lot more about me here, and I mostly write stuff and hang out on my journal and my main political website.

NB: if you want to add me and it's not obvious from your profile that I know you, send me a message; I'll deny any request from people I don't recognise--I'm here to keep in touch with actual friends, I use Livejournal, Facebook and similar, better sites for meeting new people.

Who I'd like to meet:
People. Well, people I can talk to, anyway. Preferably having a clue who the Prime Minister is, or at least have a vague idea that democracy means being involved.

Oh, and I'm singlevery very lucky, but lazy, so while I'm not actively looking, if you're female & good company then, well, I probably might put some effort in. If SB doesn't object that is.
