Maqam is to Arabic music what "Raga" or "mode" is to Indian or Western music. It is a vocabulary of melodies & melodic phrases, a language out of which the music is built. Each Maqam has a different character, and different characteristic melodies. To learn Maqam, you have to learn all of these melodies, just as you have to learn lots of words and phrases to learn a language. These maqam lessons are structured like "language tapes"--I play a phrase for you, and you imitate it back. Please take the "introductory lesson" first, and try out the sample lessons. part two of each of those sample lessons is included here to buy.
