Magnetic Baby follows Justin “Precious” Tranter and Semi Precious Weapons – New York’s aspiring garage-glam heroes – on their rise to the top. But with the record industry turned on its head, it's a tough time to be a rock band no matter how flawless you look.
Presented by two-time Academy Award winning filmmaker Barbara Kopple (Shut Up and Sing, Harlan County USA) and directed by David Becker and Pamela Romanowsky, this docu-series is a dramatic and entertaining look at rock stardom from the bottom up.
“By releasing Magnetic Baby as a podcast, we’re taking the ongoing stories of these unforgettable characters to ipods and laptops around the world,” says Kopple. “It’s an exciting part of the evolution of nonfiction filmmaking.”
Semi Precious Weapons is no ordinary band. Led by enigmatic, gender-bending singer Tranter, who is by turns outrageous and deeply moving, the band has what it takes to make it to the top.
But what does making it mean today? With the record industry reeling from internet downloading and decreasing sales, the road to success is as uncertain as ever – and every step Justin and Semi Precious Weapons take is into uncharted territory.
The series captures every raucous performance as well as intimate moments, the creative process and personal stories of bandmates and friends. Future episodes will take people inside the quest for a record deal, including an inside look at the band’s Columbia Records showcase and recording sessions with producer Tony Visconti (David Bowie, T-Rex).
Magnetic Baby features a cast of memorable supporting characters – including manager and rock legend BP Fallon, guitarist Chest Rockwell, bassist Cole Whittle, drummer Dan Crean, personal stylists/designers Tommy and Roy Couture, and Justin’s unconditionally supportive parents.
Both an in depth look at – and a response to – the changes in the record business, Magnetic Baby is made for music fans, independent film fans and industry insiders alike.
