Interview With the band Curse Icon

I actually stumbled across Curse Icon while checking out contestants in battle of bands put on by a local paper, The Toledo Blade. I then checked out their Myspace and caught some more of their tunes and was hooked. I intentionally have layed low until after the contest so as not to personally endorse anyone in the running. Now it's time for YOU to meet the band from Powell Ohio, Curse Icon. A backdrop of strong melodic riffs and the impassioned vocals of Kiana cementing this bands music into a moving mix of musical contemplation.-LoNeWoLf

LoNeWolf: I know you have just added a new bassist. How long has the rest of the band been together and who are the founding members?

CURSE ICON (MARCO): Well first I'd like to say thank you! We truly appreciate the kind words and your support. CURSE ICON as a band has been around for about 6 years. We have had some changes and some growing pains along the way, but we finally have a solid line-up that gels artistically as well as business and commitment-wise. The current line up has been together for about a year. Kiana and I (Marco) are the founding members but everyone is an integral part of this band's future success.

LoNeWoLf: Your sound is reminiscent of Evanescence. Probably catch slack for this statement but stand behind it, I personally like your music even more than Evanescence. How did you arrive at the sound you have?

CURSE ICON: Well the interesting thing is that when Curse Icon began, there was no Evanescence. We weren't even looking for a particular sound. We didn't consiously say we wanted to sound like this or that. When Kiana came through the door for an audition we didn't even know if an aggressive, dark synth oriented band with heavy guitars, would even work with a female vocalist. All I know is she blew us away with her power and range and we just said to ourselves. "I don't know if this is going to work or not, but I dig it". As we developed our sound we realized it was working on so many levels. So we just wrote what we felt and the sound kind of came together through many different influences. It was interesting at the time because nobody was doing that sound and before Evanescence broke, we were the most original sounding band in the state. When Evanescence did come out it was a bit of a double edged sword for us. On one hand people didn't think we were as original as before they hit the scene, but on the other hand it validated that the sound that we developed was marketable and could be successful.

As far as what we are influenced by, we like the aggression of heavy music, but also like the production end of well thought out structures and melodies. We also like the dark, ambient sonic textures that the synth and industrial flavors bring to the music. We like a lot of dark chordings. It's mainly just a lot of influences melding into what you hear, and it's still evolving and moving forward. We try to write in such away that allows us to expand into different areas and not be trapped in any one category. You have to keep a cohesive sound, but we like to have the latitude to experiment also. No one would be upset if we did a piano ballad, and on the same token, we can turn around and do an aggressive hard rock/metal song and still be within our "sound".

LoNeWoLf:I love the vocals of your singer Kiana.Very powerful passionate vocalist. Has she had any formal training? What is her past experience?

CURSE ICON (KIANA): Thank you soooo much for the compliment! I am honored! I have been singing since age 5. I trained with vocal coaches and studied dance through out my school years (Elementary thru HS). I have been in dozens of plays and actually choreographed the dance segments as well. I was voted, "Most likely to be Famous" in Elementary, Junior and High School. (Still waiting on that prediction..lol)!

In Florida, I had the pleasure of working with a couple of amazing cover bands and played all over the State of Florida. Then I decided to take a crack at original music, which is where Curse Icon comes in and have been with them ever since.

LoNeWoLf: The composition of the music seems to hinge on deep introspective lyrics. Who writes the music and is the over all tone of the songs intentional or just how they all came out?

CURSE ICON: We all help in the writing. I feel the amazing thing and strength of this band is that the sound is an evolving thing that is inspired from all of our influences. Sometimes we all work together, sometimes in pairs, and sometimes alone. We bring it all together in the band room or studio to create the songs. We don't limit ourselves to any one way of writing. Kiana and I work closely together on the lyrics. Everyone is encouraged and able to contribute to that as well, and it's nice when we get stuck on an idea someone might have a lyrical idea or phrasing idea that takes you somewhere completely different.

I always liked the idea of many influences coming together in unity to make a cohesive thought or sound. The places you can go when looking through someone else's eyes, or having someone yank you out of your comfort zone, really makes you look at things from a different point of view. It takes me to this place I can't describe, but it is somewhere else. I like to look through other people's eyes a lot when writing.

LoNeWoLf: In talking to you guys prior the last couple of months during the battle of the bands we have discussed how tough it is getting recognition.Would you like to elaborate on your personal experiences to get to where you are now?

CURSE ICON: WOW-that's a tough one. I mean there have been so many up and downs and good times and rough times over the years. Our number 1 factor is the love of the fans and how they touch us with their kind words. But believing in your band mates and yourself is another big part of it. I guess the biggest thing I can say is just keep believing in yourself and don't let anyone bring you down. There are so many people out there that want to bring you down. You've got to learn to not take that personal and keep moving forward. There will always be people out there that want to try and stop you from being successful. Perserverance, dedication, and a lot of hard work is what it really takes to be out there.

I'd like to say it again though, our fans are the main thing that keep us going. They are the most loyal amazing friends we have ever had. They have stuck with us through thick and thin and have brought us through some hard times. When we've had a rough moment and once of our friends or fans writes us a letter saying how one of our songs touched them in some way, well... WOW-that's an amazing feeling and worth every moment of every day we spent toiling on the song, and on our band. Our fans really are 100% of the reason why we have made it this far and we cherish them dearly.

LoNeWoLf:On your Myspace player it indicates your CD "Paradismal" has been out since 2005...is that correct? Anything new in the works? Will have a similar sound?

CURSE ICON: We do have a new record in the works. We have written 4 new tracks that we'll be playing at our live performances. We have grown so much since our last record and we are very excited about the new record. So far, our new tracks are very powerful. This winter we hope to have the major part of the writing and pre-production done for the record, and hope to start producing and recording early next year.

We are really very excited about the new record and new music. The sound has evolved but has the same essence. Our last record was all self produced and written. I feel we've become better writers and producers and it's showing in the new material. It melodic and aggressive like our previous release, but we have something to prove on this record and the songs reflect that. I personally feel the band really has finally hit it's stride in writing and developing our sound.I can't wait to get back in the studio and have the new release for everyone to hear and get as excited as we are about it!

LoNeWoLf: Since we first start talking you have signed a deal with Shakers Management Group.Congratulations.Obviously this means some tours in the future. Are you guys up for the challenge of a national tour? Have you been given any information on who you may tour with?

CURSE ICON: This is a very new and developing relationship for us. They are already working very hard for us and had something in the works. The band is trying to get it's writing done for the new record, and hopefully get it recorded to tour on for the spring of next year. Nothing is concrete yet, but we most likely will be hitting the road Spring of '09.

The band has been dying to tour for some time now. That's why we've had a few changes to ensure we can take the music to everyone who has been so kind to us all over the country and beyond. We are very excited about this new relationship and are working hard to ensure we're doing to be out there soon.

LoNeWoLf: I appreciate you talking the time for this interview.I know with persistence you guys could go a long way. Do you have anything else to add we haven't addressed?

CURSE ICON: There are a lot of really great bands out there trying to make it in this new dawn of the music industry. It an exciting time for fans and bands alike. You get to hear everything and see a ton of great new bands without all of the corporate control. If you like us, awesome. If not please support someone you do enjoy because these bands are working HARD!
