Standing there, I had no idea of what to do -- peddle, then push off? Push off, then peddle? I was lost. Not knowing the simplest steps to riding a bicycle lead me to think about all the other things I assumed I’d know at thirty-five, but didn’t. I liked to consider myself a late bloomer, meaning someone who would eventually, however late, come into bloom. Although when and if I would bloom remained a mystery. I wished I knew how to speak a foreign language fluently. I had always fantasized about being able to argue in Italian, flailing my hands over my head while yelling “Basta!
