About me: ..
Band. Zine. Label. Shitty job. Not necessarily in that order...
I'm so sick of thinking about music. Being in a band and putting out records has sort of made all music sort of less than important to me. Here's what I've been listening to lately: Les Savy Fav, Archers of Loaf, Eric Dolphy, Bill Dixon, the Raspberries...
I'm sick of watching movies. I've been working at one video store or another for almost a decade now. Recently I've watched "True Stories" (my favorite Texas movie), "The Bridge" (even suicide makes me miss San Francisco), "Elephant" (the Alan Clarke film), "Live Forever" (because I'll watch just about any music documentary) and "Stolen" (because I guess I'll really watch any documentary).
I keep reading though I don't like half of it. I've read a couple of Chuck Klosterman things which were fun, though I don't agree with half of it. Peter Biskind's "Down And Dirty Pictures" is great if not just to drag Miramax and Sundance through the mud. "Stories From The City of God" by Pasolini was great.
Angst, and bitter resentment drive me to create works that not a single idot will ever come close to grasping. Ah, the raw and unforgiving statements that bleed from my soul are so misunderstood.
You scored as Spike. You scored as Spike. You feel like you're misunderstood. When you care for others, it's deeper than they'll ever know. Though no one thinks you'll change/pull through, you'll show them.
This week I lost another amazing friend. He was too young to go... as you were. When someone said to me that we should leave work early to get icecream, I lost it. The last you and I spoke we were going to leave work early and get icecream, and talk about you missing Liberty and not talk about pain and discomfort. Today I left work early and got ice cream, in memory of you and my newly passed friend Chris. Hugs honey. Liberty, my sincere energy your way.
Talked to Stephen Egerton on Sunday. We talked about ALL possibly recording a new albulm. Turns out, were both good friends with Chris Gobo, of Sinkhole, Doc Hopper, and The Groucho Marxists. I'm sending my first band on my label, to Armstrong Studios. So it looks like Garage Sale Records is born. I know one olast times we talked, you said you were working on Cringer's Greatest Hits Volume 2. Liberty told me, that one of your friends, was going to make sure it gets put out. It's just not the same without you, we miss you.

Just thought I would let you know I'm thinking about you... guess I really miss you... I love that I can still hear your laugh whenever I think about you...
just thinking of you, like always. this summer would have been our ninth year...
while i was walking through whole paycheck this evening, they were playing eighties songs, the go-gos, the cars, the pretenders. you would have known the name of each song off the top of your head, as you always did, no matter the genre of music...
when i walked out of the store, my chin was up, but tears were flowing down my face.
what advice do you have for younger punks? were there things you did that affected their health that you regret now? how has not having health insurance affected your life?
it would also be good to hear from the queer community about the difficulty of getting health insurance because domestic partnerships aren't recognized in most of the country.
how have people dealt with this? how has this affected your lives?
discussion could extend to common issues of diy punk concern such as the industrialization of food sourcing, lack of resources alloted to preventive care, urban design and transportation, mental health, etc., that are intimately connected to health.
this is in no way meant to be a comprehensive list, but rather some ideas to start discussion. you can contribute in whatever form you feel comfortable with: telling a personal experience, interviewing someone with an interesting perspective, a rant, essay/informational piece, cartoon, letter...
anyways, please do contribute! i know many, many of you have faced these issues in various ways.
best,
liberty
Fight the low self-esteem that says you're not worth taking care of -- this is most definitely also the enemy!
mrr punks & health special issue: July 1 deadline *please contribute!*
mrr has kindly agreed to do a special issue on health and punks! it's partially to commemorate lance, as he was such a part of MRR for two decades, but discussion will focus on a wide range of health issues faced by the now-aging punk community.
so many people in the punk community were so good to lance (and to me) throughout all of his health difficulties, and i've been thinking a lot about how we could repay you/them in some small way. i thought it might be good to raise discussion of the particular health issues in this (now aging) community and what we can do to help each other.
it just kills me that if, ten years ago, lance had had a yearly physical he could have gotten his blood pressure under control and none of this would have happened... of course, as a musician, he hadn't had a physical since he was eighteen or so. the community is losing too many good people far too young.
possible topics:
a wide range of discussion from people who have some professional training (doctors, nurses, emts, therapists, social workers, dieticians, etc.) who may not be currently active in the underground music scene, but who have some understanding of health, how the body works, medicine, and the issues particular to the community: the physical stresses of touring for many years on the body, no access to preventive care, no health insurance, low self-esteem, risk taking, insomnia, vegetarian/vegan diets, body image issues, drug/alcohol issues, dislike of competitive sports for exercise, and so on...
resources that you know of: there's probably a good bit of knowledge, advice, and resources hidden away out there that could help a lot of people
it would be tremendously powerful to hear from older punks: what health issues are you now facing (arthritis in the hands from guitar-playing? deafness? other things?) what advice do you have for younger punks? were there things you
