    Nick Kristof's Interests
GeneralHiking. Running. Traveling to exotic locales. Writing stories about people and places that rarely warrant front-page news. Skiing. Hanging out with my family.
MusicSimon and Garfunkel. Mozart. Stay with me, I'm gonna blow your mind. Early Madonna. U2 in general, but mostly because I like Bono. Cheap Trick: my college roommate loved them.
Movies"Chariots of Fire" because of the running. I like all the James Bond movies. I don't judge Craig over Brosnan or Moore over Connery, I'm in it for the chase and sex scenes and the villain's names.
TelevisionI don't watch much, mostly just videos on the Web.
BooksShakespeare's sonnets (for real!), Samantha Power's "A Problem From Hell," anything Harry Potter, all of the Lee Child thrillers. Also, I read a lot of history, policy and biographies.
HeroesGandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Mukhtar Mai (if you don't know her, google her, she's Bono-cool), Colin Fletcher, legendary backpacker.

About me:
I'm a columnist at the N.Y. Times. I'm largely discontinuing this site and focusing instead on Facebook: www.facebook.com/kristof -- check that out. You can get more dirt on me (including my blog and my bio, complete with airplane crash and a mob carrying heads on pikes) at www.nytimes.com/kristof. When I'm not running around the world, my favorite thing is backpacking. When I grow up, I aim to hike from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Crest Trail. I'm trying to get my three kids to commit themselves to doing it with me, but they're afraid they'll have to carry me. I grew up on a farm in a little town in Oregon called Yamhill, and still visit every year. Oregon is also the base for most of my backbacking trips.
Who I'd like to meet:
Julia Roberts. Princess Di, if she were alive. Also the Dalai Lama. Maybe Osama bin Laden and Musa Hilal (a leader of the Janjaweed in Sudan). Princess Masako of Japan. President Hu Jintao of China.

Hey Nick,

I just got back from Somaliland, the breakaway republic in the northwest of Somalia. My friends and I were lucky enough to spend a day with Edna Adan Ismail, the founder of the only maternity hospital in Somaliland. I first learned about her, of course, from you!

We made a short film (7 minutes) profiling Edna and examining the suffering and salvation of Somaliland's women.

It's at:

Thank you for doing what you do.

Hey Nick, stopping by to wish you Happy Holidays and a wonderful New Year!

Thanks again for your friendship, will have more student essays and projects to share in '08.

Couldn’t afford to get a gift for all my friends on MySpace, so I’m sharing Francis E.W. Harper’s “Songs for the People” …

LET me make the songs for the people,
Songs for the old and young;
Songs to stir like a battle-cry
Wherever they are sung.

Not for the clashing of sabres,
For carnage nor for strife;
But songs to thrill the hearts of men
With more abundant life.

Let me make the songs for the weary,
Amid life's fever and fret,
Till hearts shall relax their tension,
And careworn brows forget.

Let me sing for little children,
Before their footsteps stray,
Sweet anthems of love and duty,
To float o'er life's highway.

I would sing for the poor and aged,
When shadows dim their sight;
Of the bright and restful mansions,
Where there shall be no night.

Our world, so warn and weary,
Needs music, pure and strong,
To hush the jangle and discords
Of sorrow, pain, and wrong.

Music to soothe all its sorrow,
Till war and crime shall cease;
And the hearts of men grown tender
Girdle the world with peace.
Paul

Hi Mr Kristof, I'm not sure if you are aware of the recent piece on the politics of naming in Darfur by Columbia professor Mahmood Mamdani in the London Review of Books but I would like to read your rebuttal if you do write one. Thanks

I can't read some of your articles b/c I don't subscribe to Times Select. It seems a little dumb that the important information you are trying to impart, that everyone should know about, is limited to the select few that have money to pay to read. Is there any way you could post some sort of ongoing blog on your myspace page, that could work in conjunction with your NY Times job or be something you do on the side that you wouldn't get in trouble with the NYT?

May 24 2007 4:35 PM

Hey Nick,

Four years ago I graduated from college with the vague idea that I wanted to travel. I started reading your column and was inspired to see the why-would-you-go-there? areas of the world. Mostly I wandered in Third World conflict zones and spent my days talking with people — particularly young people — living in dark circumstances. I asked them how they got by.

Four years later and I've published a book about my travels. It's titled The Ghostly Ones. Some of the places I write about include: Ethiopia, Sarajevo, Kashmir, Afghanistan, Siberia, Bolivia and Iran.

Let me know if you would like a copy and thank you for doing what you do. My pictures and writing can be found at devinfoxall.com.

All the best and stay safe.

Dear friends,

I would like to share with you why I love myspace. I share my ideas in my blog about Darfur and I have had the fortune of meeting Indirect Democracy. My essay on Darfur is read on this wonderful Podcast. Please visit the website and go to Podcast #26:

http://www.indirectdemocracy.podomatic.com/

and their myspace page

http://www.myspace.com/indirectdemocracy

Thank you and I hope we can work together on stopping the injustice in Darfur.

Maria

a synopsis on the podcast:

Darfur and Immigration -

After a long, and unexpected delay, Indirect Democracy is back. On this Podcast, I will cover a personal story involving a friend’s final step towards citizenship. It is important to remember all the people who come here to work and struggle to attain the American dream and be part of our collective experience as a nation. Sharing that moment with her is something I will not soon forget.

I received an essay regarding Darfur that I am proud to share. It coincides with the Global Day for Darfur that passed on April 29. The writer, named Maria Halyna, runs a website dedicated to educating us all about the tragedy of Darfur – tragedy seems like such a small word when you consider this living horror. I encourage you to visit her site and learn more: http://blog.myspace.com/mariahalynal

The music from this Podcast is entitled, “Still Waiting,” by the Greyboy Allstars. You can find their music at: www.greyboyallstars.com

As well, there is the Global Warming Update, the President’s Love Horoscope, a word from a new sponsor AND, as always, the What a Weinie Award.

Thanks for listening.

Nick, keep fighting the good fight! Your columns are one of the best things about the Times -- balanced and incisive, impassioned and thoughtful, and sometimes funny as hell (like when you raised money to pay for Bill O'Riley to visit Darfur). How many people's work really makes a difference? Yours does.

Best,
Barry

Patrick

p.s. you're writing is of great value. I'm not just saying that because I want to win. I have been checking it out, and it reiterates to me somehting that I have become increasingly aware of-that it is important to put one's energy towards pursuits that have social value, in the interest of becoming a self actualized individual. Being a teacher has given me this fulfillment, but I seek it in all passions that I pursue. I hope that the next oportunity will be with you.

I think you're great and really appreciate the areas of journalism you concentrate on. I think there isn't enough coverage of or activism on these issues. I really, really wanted to apply to win the trip this year but I'm not a full time student. Thanks for not putting an age limit on it (I'm non-traditional aged) so I can apply next year when I am full time. Be safe!
