Born and raised in Milwaukee, Katy Pfaffl grew up as a classical musician. She began studying Suzuki violin at age 6, piano at age 12 and by the age of 13 she was competing as a serious classical pianist throughout the Midwest. In high school her creative interests grew leading her to become a Downbeat Award winning jazz vocalist as well as the top young composer for contemporary orchestral music in Wisconsin.
Shortly after attending college at the University of Cincinnatis College Conservatory of Music, Katy moved to New York and began performing as a singer/pianist/violinist in the band SWIM while earning a reputation the therapeutic voice teacher she is to this day. Striving for musical freedom and in search of her individual voice, Katy taught herself the guitar, and started The Katy Pfaffl Band launching her full speed into the local NY singer/songwriter scene.
Within months, Katy recorded and released her first album Katy Pfaffl in New York City, followed soon after by her second album As She Stands released in 2003.
Katy marries her brand of raw sincerity and gorgeous melody with a commodity so rare in today's singer/songwriter arena: talent. Her sound is sweetyet urgent, light yet soulful, and instantly memorable.
Katy Pfaffl can be seen performing regularly throughout Manhattan/NJ/LA as well as within the college circuit.
"Katy is the newest addition to Hearts & Voices on the disc and one of the most inspiring songwriters you’ll ever see. Prolific, almost frighteningly talented, and with a dedicated NYC following, her new release ‘If I Rise’ captures the energy of her transcendent live performances." LIFEbeat
"...Local singer/songwriting ivory-and-violin-tickling butterfly named Katy Pfaffl... has that ineffable 'it' that defines the true ones, the gifted ones, the aliens." Relix Magazine
"New York's Katy Pfaffl is a bundle of songwriting and performing talent, playing the piano, violin, guitar and her own vocal pipes, with authority. Her voice is velvety smooth, lilting and floating easily through an impressive vocal range." Bella Online
"The self-titled album is a rather poignant piece of work that showcases Katys unique vocal approach as well as her fresh style of songwriting. Hopefully we will hear more from this gifted young womans talent in the years to come. We need more visionaries like Katy Pfaffl." Independent Songwriter Magazine
"A mainstream rock sound with nice jazz undertones. A great voice, fabulous songs and sleek production; one who distinguishes herself from the rest of the pack. Her songs are among the strongest from recent songwriters." Guitar Noise Magazine
"A voice that can dodge downtown traffic or float over autumn fields." Maximum Ink Magazine
"Katy Pfaffl is expressive and enthusiastic, strongly voiced and incredibly gifted. There is beauty here, optimism and wistfulness." Rambles Magazine Online
