Kaleidoscope Theatre was founded in 1977 to create and perform educational theatrical plays and workshops for participation with students of elementary, middle, junior and senior high schools, clubs and organizations. Kaleidoscope Theatre creates the opportunity for talented young people to develop theatrical abilities by encouraging participation in the production and performance of theatrical plays. The goal of each performance is to educate and entertain young people through the medium of presentational and participatory drama.
Kaleidoscope Theatre incorporates many of its theatrical topics to address youth educational issues such as drug dependence, drug prevention and elimination issues, teen pregnancy, divorce, deafness, as well as mainstreaming (inclusion) both in schools and in society. Young actors with disabilities have also been strongly encouraged to participate in all areas of theatrical production. At this time, the professional touring theatre company has among its company of performers six actors with mental retardation and several others with major or minor physical disabilities. Each production contains important messages as subtly as possible but with the recurring theme that "we are all special."
Kaleidoscope Theatre has received many awards, among them a Best of Rhode Island award from Rhode Island Monthly Magazine, a Rhode Island Theatre Achievement Award, and a Rhode Island Jefferson Award. The Rhode Island Association for Retarded Citizens has bestowed several awards and accolades over the past twenty years and the theatre company was chosen to represent the United States in 1989 at an International Down Syndrome Congress in Jerusalem, Israel. The company has toured from Maine to Texas and appeared at three National Association of Retarded Citizen's National Conventions.
Who I'd like to meet: Any fans of our shows, young or old, who have grown to love Kaleidoscope Theatre productions over the years!
We would also like to meet any talented local performers, who feel that their abilities as a singer/dancer/actor would make them a natural addition to the Kaleidoscope Theatre family!
