Josh's Interests
|
| Music | I've been really enjoying Arcade Fire's "Neon Bible" lately. The Decemberists' "Crane Wife" and The Shins' "Wincing the Night Away" are frequently playing on my iPod. As always, I'm enjoy Danielson and Sufjan Stevens. Then there's Death Cab, Modest Mouse, Architecture in Helsinki, Rufus Wainwright, Snow Patrol, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Arctic Monkeys... It's hard to keep track some times. | | Movies | I love movies. Federico Fellini is one of my favorite filmmakers - "Nights of Cabiria" is amazing, as is "La Strada" and "I Vitelloni." Wes Anderson's film have always been great - "The Royal Tenenbaums" is one of my favorites. I love Bresson's "Au Hasard Balthazar." "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" is brilliant. I prefer the silent films of Buster Keaton to the silent films of Charlie Chaplin. "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" is gorgeous and "Amelie" always makes me smile. I think Julie Taymor's "Titus" is the best adaptation of Shakespeare to make its way onto the screen. Orson Welles was a genius - every time I watch "Citizen Kane" I learn something new and his influence on "The Third Man" is undeniable. Kurosawa's work is stirring and magnificent, especially "Ikiru" and "Rashomon." I could keep going, but the list would be longer than anything else on this site. | | Television | So, I know most people think that television is rotting the minds of America's youth, and granted, much of it is. But I also think that there is some value in the way television allows writers to tell longer stories. I think Reality Television is straight from the third circle of hell, but even in the midst of all the dreck out there, I've still managed to find some shows that were worthwhile. I've recently been watching the 1960's cult classic "The Prisoner" and the recent reinvention of "Doctor Who." Both and brilliant. I love "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer" and I don't care who knows it. "Scrubs" is genius and I was pleasantly surprise by "My Name is Earl" and the Amercian version of "The Office" (especially since I hate sit-coms). The Sci-Fi Channel's reimagining of "Battlestar Galactica" may have the sci-fi nerd crying foul, but it is consistently one of the best and most thought-provoking shows on television. | | Books | I just finished reading "The Children's Hospital," a dense, difficult and wonderful work of literary fantasy. I loved Michael Chabon's "The Amazing Adventures of Cavalier and Klay," one of the best novels you will ever read. Really. Ian McEwan's "Atonement" is fantastic. Nabokov's "Pale Fire" was one of my favorite reads over the past year, as were Salvador Plascencia's "The People of Paper" and Dave Eggers' "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius." Eggers latest novel, "What is the What" is a gorgeous, unsentimental look at the horrors of the Sudan. I subscribe to and read (cover-to-cover) "McSweeney's Quarterly Concern" and their non-fiction off-shoot, "The Believer." I have actually read all of "Moby Dick" and didn't find it as boring as many people seem to. I love Dickens, especially "A Tale of Two Cities" and "Great Expectations." I've just started "The Brothers Karamazov" and am loving it. |

About me:
I am writer, living in the Seattle area. I currently work for Seattle Pacific University where I write and direct two half-hour plays each year for the university's traveling theatre troupe. I have also written plays for Taproot Theatre, King's Junior High School, and Westmont College. With my brother and sister-in-law, I edit and publish a multi-disciplinary arts journal known as "quiet SHORTS" (www.WhoGotYourEar.com). I have several short stories in circulation and my story "Watching the Pot" was printed in the fourth volume of "Buffalo Carp," a literary journal based in Illinois.
