Sounds Like
Vocals sound like Stevie Wonder, Jeff Buckley, or Sting; guitar sounds like Jimi Hendrix, Leo Nocentelli, or Jeff Beck, rhythms sound like Galactic because that's who's playing it.
I'm a San Francisco-based musician and music journalist who spends most of life either playing guitar and singing, or sitting in front of a computer--sometimes all at once. I grew up in Toledo, Ohio loving Motown and classic rock, especially the San Francisco Sound. I moved out in 1998. There's a strong New Orleans connection here, and over the past decade I've gotten deeper and deeper into NOLA funk, making several sojourns to Jazz Fest. I'm a tried and true Libra, so I'm always trying to blend this and that to find some new balance.
My new CD Surfin' the Swamp is a SF/NOLA hybrid with Pacific vibes and greasy grooves. Galactic's rhythm section of Stanton Moore and Robert Mercurio played drums and bass on the recordings.
After Katrina, a bunch of NOLA musicians moved to SF. I hooked up the Honey Island Swamp Band through regular gigs at the Boom Boom Room, and I contributed to the CD. You can hear it at myspace.com/honeyislandswampband. Garland Paul & Sam Price played drums and bass on one Surfin the Swamp track, "She Belongs." Those guys are back in New Orleans now, and I play with them when I'm there.
I'm now calling the network of players in SF and NOLA the Jimmy Leslie Connection. In addition to Garland and Sam, it includes: Bassists Jonathan Herrera (Bass Player Magazine), Mark Calderon (Zigaboo Modeliste), and Andrew "Panthelion" Currier (LunaGroove), drummers Shani (London Street), and Tony Dunn (Tree of Frogs), keyboardist Joel Nelson (Bo Diddley), and guitarist Sean Leahy (Four Year Bender).
At long last, I'm doing the official release of Surfin' the Swamp to press and radio ect. After that, I'll flesh out the next batch of songs and record enough brand new ones to complete a second NOLA/SF hybrid with the working title "Bay to Bayou."
In addition to my own project, I play gigs with Shana Morrison (Van's girl), LunaGroove (livetronica), and occasionally with the Honey Island Swamp Band. I write regularly for Guitar Player and Bass Player.
Through playing and writing, I've connected with tons of musicians, from Perry Ferrell and Bob Weir, to the kids coming up through the School of Rock, to the many many music heads I meet everywhere from Jazz Fest to Burning Man. I'm looking forward to connecting with more good folks who share the same passion for music and good livin'!
