Sounds Like
A goose being strangled with a water hose. Or the uilleann-piping equivalent of Patrick Swayze's vocal performance on "She's Like The Wind" from the Academy Award-winning soundtrack to Dirty Dancing.
Jason Killingsworth was born in Galway, Ireland, and raised in Dublin till age seven, at which time his parents relocated to Southern California where he had to memorize the Pledge of Allegiance and suffer the pestering of classmates who made fun of his Irish accent until it disappeared. Intolerant little pricks.
Jason plays guitar (John Mayes Custom Parlor acoustic), pipes (Michael Vignoles half-set, Seth Gallagher chanter) and whistle (Overton low D by Colin Goldie) in the Atlanta-based Irish trad band, Music In The Glen. They just released their debut CD, Fuar, a winter/holiday album.
Jason also serves as the Deputy Editor and Games Editor for an entertainment magazine called Paste. Even though he spends his afternoons scouring stacks of new music--pop, indie rock, Americana, punk, electronica, silky-smooth jazz (ok, no smooth jazz)--he fills his iPod with Seamus Ennis, Brian McNamara, Paddy Keenan, Liam O’Flynn and David Power, to name just a few.
Jason’s been playing guitar since ’92, house since ’04 (wife’s name is Summer), pipes and whistle since late ’05, and writing third-person bios since just now.
I was just forwarded your article from Paste magazine about the pipes and growing up in Ireland. Very nice writing and very enjoyable to read. I experienced similar wanderings as a toddler. Once a lorry driver walked into the house with me in his arms, "Is this yours?" he asked my Mum. You can imagine her surprise ;)
Anyway, best of luck with the pipes. Where are you in So Cal? Have you been a club meeting? www. socalpipers. com
Helloooo out there! I am releasing my 2nd CD this spring "Looking up from Underwater" - I would LOVE to get you a copy somehow. Let me know if you might like to hear it.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to get down to Atlanta this weekend. I was hoping to hang out/help out with drone reeds, but it'll have to wait. Hopefully, we'll be able to visit sometime soon though. Matt
Awesome! Let me know what you think. Hopefully, the reed will work fine. It will probably need tweaking though, as reeds from pipe-makers are usually about 90% finished. Send me a line if ya need any help, been doing the reed thing as long as the pipe thing (I like pipes better!). Matt
hey my friend saw your profile and thinks you look hot! she is new to myspace but wants to chat with you on msn messenger her name on there is emily87sugar@hotmail.com
Hey bro, haven't heard from ye in a minute.....how's the band doing down there in Hot 'Lanta? Will you be at the Tionol in Roswell this Spring? I believe it's in April - have to check the Southern Pipers site. Hope you're enjoying your Goldie Overton, I know I am!
Hey Jason, how's it going? Kat gave me a copy of the album, and it sounds great. We'll have to have some chunes and a pint next time I come up. Pelham ended up taking that spare set of pipes away from me when he moved to Boston, that bastard. It's probably for the better anyways!
hey silly billy! I do need to go down and visit you guys in HOT-lanta. I will work on that. I should be makin multi-millions soon. i will keep you posted...
likewise! nice stuff to you too. and thanks for giving us a listen. we gotta get you to play pipes or whistle with us sometime. might work nicely - you never know. i'm the mandolin player and i learned by playing along with pogues tapes. i keep trying to sneak irish stuff into our sets but it hasn't happened yet..... but ya never know. thanks again! matt from jcl.
Hey...trust me Jason. U r wise to acquire a concert chanter from Seth. His are more or less based on a Johnny Bourke/Rowsome bore...which is good! I love mine #46. Never played a better chanter. I really liked David Powers' Alain Froment chanter though. Go with Seth. you won't be disapointed. mattmc
