About me:
THE SILENCED. This is a trailer for new book being released in June. I'm also the author of BLUE, my first novel with HARPERCOLLINS.MySpace Layouts

.. ABOUT THE SILENCED: In a country of mandatory Youth Training Facilities and Social Re-Adaptation Communities, Marena struggles to remember a time before the Zero Tolerance Party installed listening devices in every home and forbade citizens to read or write. A time before Loyalty Correction Centers and the Millennium War. A time when she was free. A chillingly contemporary novel. Available now pre-publication on-line.

Hi James! I devoured The Silenced, and have been recommending it to my friends. What a twisted, yet believable, world. The author's note at the back was chilling.

What month was THE SILENCED released? I just finished it, couldn't put it down. In light of today's America, it is very chilling and I hope not prescient.

Loved the book! It has also inspired me to read more about Sophie Scholl. Thanks so much!

ALA, KIRKUS, Shoah Education, and VOYA REVIEWS of The Silenced!!

American Library Association Booklist

"…Gripping suspense combined with satisfyingly capable teen characters make this a good YA read…A convincing dystopia…" — Kathleen Isaacs

VOYA

Voice of Youth Advocates

"…Marena is sympathetically drawn, and she has a gift for words…The gripping plot will engage readers and raise fundamental questions about individual responsibility and the cost of conscience." —Rayna Patton

Children's Literature

"…The book keeps up a fast pace that will appeal to teen readers. An interesting discussion of freedom and control that can be used as a conversation-starter as readers grapple with the question posed to Marena and the other students: "Who do you think you are?"

Kirkus Reviews

"…tautly plotted novel…Ripe for discussion…"

Seattle Times

Summer novels for teens offer escapism with substance

"…With plenty of twists and betrayals, the fast-paced plot still gives readers time to reflect: Would they risk their lives for what they believe?"

Shoah Education

"The Silenced is unique…I would recommend this book to Middle and High School students and libraries for its unique approach and readability, and I believe it could be well used in a literature or social studies class to approach an introduction to Holocaust Education.

Hi there! We received an ARC of this book that I took home (and will be reading shortly) because it looked so good! Keep up the great work and stop by the store when you're in our neck of the woods :)

Mar 19 2007 2:29 PM

Hi James,

Thank you so much for the invitation! The book sounds as though it fills a niche in YA literature that has been neglected in recent years. Miss D. Meanor has long forgotten many books that she read in high school, but still remembers George Orwell's 1984 with clarity!

Have a great week!
