I Want Rhythm's Blurbs |
About me:
(PLEASE NOTE: I am specifically looking for participants for this Toronto-based dance intervention. A friend of I WANT RHYTHM is someone who participates. If you have no intention of participating, I must deny your friend request, thanks for reading anyhow!-N)
The last totally delightful I WANT RHYTHM was on Roncesvalles Sunday, Nov 4. For the whole story, check out my blog.
I WANT RHYTHM is currently sending out an open call for participants. If you live in Toronto and are interested in bringing joy to our streets through random dance, send me your email address and I will add you to my growing list of dancers. Any dance to which a minimum of four people RSVP to is a go. I WANT RHYTHM IS REALLY FUN, TOTALLY FREE AND LIBERATING. YOU'LL LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!
TESTIMONIAL: "Nicole, it was exhilirating. It feels as if we did something important for Toronto (and for ourselves and each other) yesterday. I'm honoured to have been part of it".-Natalie, dancer, November 19.
"Yesterday released me - My creative output was 20 times greater on the fly in that 1/2 hour than in my 6 hours working on the computer. I'm now exploring bringing that
flow into my body-bound computer sessions".- Jonathan, dancer, November 19.
I WANT RHYTHYM,
A Public Space Intervention,
Artist’s Statement,
By Nicole Stoffman.
Welcoming public spaces are an urban architectural feature sadly lacking in Toronto. Italy’s Piazza Del Campo in Siena and Piazza Navona in Rome attract locals and tourists alike by keeping the focus on people rather than on cars and advertising. By creating a space where the theatre of urban life can play itself out on a daily basis, these public spaces enhance people’s enjoyment of the city, and enrich its culture. A few years back it was proposed that the strip mall at College and Crawford in Toronto’s Little Italy be converted into a public square. The proposal was scrapped in favour of the convenience of shopping at the existing big box stores. These kinds of stories are heartbreaking for a Toronto-born performing artist like me who would like to see Canada’s cultural capital really shine. So I founded I WANT RHYTYM.
I WANT RHYTHM is a public space intervention that gives people permission to dance to music they encounter just a walkin’ down the street. I pick a meeting place for self-selected participants to congregate and then we dance along a lively stretch of Toronto, thereby transforming a functional space, the sidewalk, into a living space, a moving dance floor.
I WANT RHYTHM allows participants to spontaneously react to music projected onto the sidewalk by commercial businesses. It is a dance party deejayed by an unwitting collective of store clerks brought together through chance. This built-in spontaneity makes I WANT RHYTHM a “happening” in the true sense of the word.
The unlicensed use of music by retail businesses to enhance people’s shopping experience has recently been a source of bitter conflict between these two industries. I WANT RHYTHM soars over the issue of music ownership by using it for it’s original purpose; to inspire feelings of joy and freedom.
I WANT RHYTHM restores the theatre of urban life to Toronto streets. No longer are the sidewalks just a way to travel from point A to point B but they are a stage on which to express the human need to dance.
ABOUT ME...
I am a dancer-turned-actor-turned-film student-turned-singer-turned-multidisciplinary performing artist! I was born in Toronto and fell in love with the performing arts at the age of five. After studying acting and dancing in studios around Toronto I perfomed in various tv shows and films including Degrassi Junior High, Learning the Ropes, Married Life and Anchor Zone. I was nominated for a Gemini award for my performance on Degrassi Junior High. I studied theatre technique at Circle in the Square Theatre in New York and the Royal Academy of Art in London England and appeared in Summerworks and Fringe Festival producions as well as a production of King Lear that toured to Trinidad, West Indies.
In 2000, I studied singing and guitar and in 2002 landed my first music gig as vocalist for Jeff Healey's Jazz Wizards. In 2003 I launched Nicole Stoffman's Jazz Bohème,an acoustic gypsy swing band specializing in vintage French and American repertoire. As vocalist, band leader and rhythm guitar player for Le Jazz Bohème, I performed 400 shows in four years including a solo tour to the south of France and Barcelona, and a residency at Le Cercle Rouge Bistro in Tribeca, New York City, in the summer of 2006. Nicole Stoffman's Jazz Bohème has been heard on CBC's Vinyl Café, Radio Canada and Jazz.FM91.
Upon my return from New York, I began to realize my own multidisciplinary visual ideas, of which I WANT RHYTHM is just one. I hope to show my joyful, Toronto-centered work in a gallery show in 2007/8.
Shalom,
Nicole
