just watched Robinson Crusoe on Mars (1964) letterBOX DVD w/ Ib & Cleo. DUE out 9/18/MMVII. Very very interesting. Then I (KEM) came home & watched again w/ commentary. Paul Mantee & Vic Lundin confirm thruOUT commentary the version Ib speaks of in PERSON. Cleo Baldon (IB wife) drawings in special edition DVD are fascinating. Ib is hard at work on presentation 4 his 90 Bday party w/ fabulous list of confirmed guests. Tom Korbit SPACE cadet friends, etc etc. Foundation 4 autoBIO is in place... STAY tuned. IB can recall detail of images taken 80 PLUS yrs ago. Book will be amazing to say the least...

I read with interest what my friend and colleague Herbert Strock had to say about MONSTER BASH magazine, and I ditto his remarks with the exception that I would include in kudos the excellent article about Herbert by Lawrence Fultz Jr., which I found most enjoyable. Herbert and I worked as writers/directors in that fabulous realm of science fiction movies at a time when we spent imagination rather than dollars. It is refreshing and gratifing to see a magazine such as MONSTER BASH keeping those times alive for a new generation of si-fi fans to experience. As the greeting went in my film THE TIME TRAVELERS so is mine to the creators of MONSTER BASH - "Be well"! On an unnamed college campus, four scientists--stern older Dr. von Steiner (Foster), who wears a monocle so well remember he's German; hot-headed Dr. Connors (Carey); blonde Carol (Anders); and youthful comic relief Danny (Franken), who annoyingly exclaims "Holy McKee!" to express astonishment--accidentally open a time portal to the not-too-distant future--the year 2071, to be exact. Stumbling through, they're shocked to discover that the Earth is a burnt-out wasteland--the result of a nuclear holocaust. Unable to return to the present while chased by mutants (played by various Los Angeles Lakers), the group finds safety in some nearby caves, where they are rescued by some faceless androids. The androids take their 20th-century visitors to their leaders, the last remnants of human civilization, who are building a spaceship to Alpha Centauri V, where they plan to colonize as New Earth. The foursome resigns themselves to their new lives amongst the stars, until they're informed by friendly Council leader Varno (Hoyt) that there's no room for them onboard their spaceship, and that they have less than a month to return to their own time or perish at the hands of the vicious mutants.

THE TIME TRAVELERS may be best remembered for its downbeat twist ending, which was quite innovative for the time and was even copied in Hewitt's uncredited remake JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF TIME. Although plagued by cheap production values and a few stiff performances, Melchior displays plenty of imagination and does a nice job getting it on the screen. Cameramen Vilmos Zsigmond and Laszlo Kovacs enliven the many cave sets with bright colors, and the violent finale features a surprising amount of brutality and bloodshed. Also with PLAYBOY Playmate Delores Wells, Joan Woodbury, Dennis Patrick and Forrest J. Ackerman. The bold (often overly so) score is by Richard DeSalle. Released by American-International. Saxo Grammaticus (estimated. 1150 - 1220) was a Danish medieval historian of whose life practically nothing is known. The sixteen books of Danish history of this time, known as the Gesta Danorum, are attributed to him, and also contribute our principal evidence of his own existence. We know he was a "follower" of Archbishop Absalon, which probably means he worked in the Archbishop’s administration; his exact status is not determined. He might have been a clerk. In Absalon’s will, one clericus named Saxo is forgiven a debt of two and a half silver marks and is enjoined to return two manuscripts he has borrowed, to Sorø monastery. From a dozen Saxos or comments on Saxo, found in Danish sources from this timeframe or later, this is the only Saxo comment to be generally accepted to be about the Saxo Grammaticus. However there is no evidence that definitely proves that this comment in Absalon’s will is about our Saxo Grammaticus. We read in the preface of Gesta Danorum Saxo’s own words that his father and grandfather both served under King Valdemar I as warriors and that he himself would like to serve King Valdemar II, though in a more spiritual way. These few lines just listed are the only concrete information that exists about Saxo Grammaticus. It is thought he was born on Zealand, as later sources claim. His elegant Latin and Roman knowledge, used in Gesta Danorum, makes it nearly certain that he was educated outside of Denmark, maybe in one of the big church-schools in France. Saxo Grammaticus was not his real name. He received the appellation Grammaticus, the Latin word for a teacher of letters, in the Compendium Saxonis of Chronica Jutensis, around 1342, to express delight in his use of words. With the printed press publication of Christiern Pedersen's version of Gesta Danorum, the term Grammaticus has stuck to Saxo as being part of his name. About the author Ib Melchior as well as being a best-selling author, is also a motion picture Writer-director-producer In Hollywood with some twelve feature films and numerous T.V shows and documentaries to his credit. He was born and educated in Denmark majoring in literature and languages and graduated from the university of Copenhagen. He then joined a British Theatrical company: The English players, with headquarters in parts, France, as an actor and toured Europe with this troupe, becoming state manager and Co-director of the company. Just prior to the outbreak of World War 11 in europe, he came to the United States with this company to do a Broadway play. Then followed a stint In the Stage Managing Department of Radio City Music Hall and the Center neater ice Shows in New York, and when Pearl FBI was attacked he volunteered No services to the US Armed force. He served with the |cloak-and-dagger OSS for a while and was then transferred to the U5 Military Intelligence Service. He spent two years in European Theater of operations as a military intelligence Investigator attached to the Counter Intelligence Corps. For his work In the FFO, among other hones he # was decorated by the US Army as well as by the King of Denmark, and was subsequently awarded the Knight Commander crop of the Militant Order of St. Brlgitte of Sweden. All the war he became active in television and began his writing career. He has directed over 500 'I'V shows both live and filmed, from the Musical "The Perry Como show" on CBS-TV on which show be served as director for the three and a half years; to the dramatic documentary series, one March of Medicine on NBC-TV. He has served as director or in a production capacity on eight feature motion pictures In Hollywood, including AIP' s unusual The Time Travelers, which he both wrote are directed.
Besides his extensive career as a director, Ib Melchior 's background as an author and writer includes over a million words published in story and article in many national magazines including LIFE, as well as in several European periodicals; some of his work has been included in anthologies here and abroad. He has also written a couple of legitimate plays for the stage: one being Hour of Vengeance- a dramatization on the ancient Amlet legend that was the original source for Hamlet This play was produced at the Globe Theater in Los Angeles, and Melchior was honored with the Shakespeare Society of America ' s Hamlet Award for Excellence in Playwriting, 1982. He has also translated and narrated a cassette album of several of the stories of Hans Christian Andersen. Melchior has won several national awards for his TV and documentary film short subjects that he wrote, directed and produced, and he has written several scripts for various TV series including Men Into Space and The Outer limits. Among his twelve feature films are "Ambush Bay' a motion picture with a World War II background filmed in the Philippines for United Artists, as well as Robinson Crusoe on Mars for Paramount, and several other films with a science fiction theme, such as the cult film "The Angry Red Planet which he both wrote and directed. ln 1976 he was awarded the GOLDEN SCROLL for best writing by the Academy of Science Fiction As creator of Space Family Robinson / Lost In Space served as Special Advisor on the Lost In Space feature motion picture, Prelude Pictures/New Line, 1998.
