The HERMIT is an award-winning live indie/pop/electronica band founded by drummer and musician Hamish Thomson in Vancouver, Canada in the year 2000. The HERMIT recently completed their third album, Turn Up (The Stereo), with co-producer Krish Sharma (Perry Farrell, Rolling Stones).
The HERMIT's independently-released 2001 debut album, Flying Out Of Solitude - largely a solo studio effort recorded and produced by Thomson himself with the help of engineer/mixer wiz Mike Rogerson- garnered multiple West Coast Music Award nominations in his native Canada and led to a record deal with Nettwerk Records.
The follow up album, 2005's critically-acclaimed Wonderment - released by Nettwerk and again produced by Thomson with Rogerson engineering and mixing– heralded a fuller sound and a more collaborative approach, featuring vocal contributions from Martina Sorbara, Allison Shevernoha, Shelley Campbell, C.R. Avery and Frazey Ford (of fellow Vancouverites and Nettwerk label-mates The Be Good Tanyas).
The release of Wonderment also marked a period of more intensive touring by the live incarnation of The HERMIT featuring Thomson on drums, Robb Mitchell ..boards, Jon Frederiksen on bass and Allison Shevernoha on vocals. The HERMIT hit tour stops on all points of the compass, heading West for multiple shows on Vancouver Island; North to the Telus World Ski & Snowboard Festival in Whistler; South of the border to Seattle's ROCKRGRL Conference and East to Toronto for shows at Canadian Music Week, NXNE and Montreal's Infringement Festival. Back home in Vancouver, The HERMIT headlined almost every room in town as well as teaming up with touring acts Bonobo, Ivy and Broken-Social-Scene-offshoot Apostle of Hustle for shows at the Commodore, Richards on Richards and The Red Room.
Early in 2006, The HERMIT finally began to see the fruits of its labours. An artist profile on Much Music's Going Coastal show was followed by the video for Wonderment album track Sir Real climbing to the 1 position on Bravo's Top 30 Video Countdown. Then in March 2006, The HERMIT was voted Favourite Electronica Artist at Canadian Music Week's Indie Awards holding off strong competition from Caribou and Junior Boys. As chartattack.com noted later that month, "The HERMIT are finally getting their due."
For The HERMIT's third long-player, 2007's Turn Up (The Stereo), Thomson reunited with singer Allison Shevernoha who contributed vocals to two stand-out tracks on Wonderment - Flutterbye and Sir Real. Thomson and Shevernoha co-wrote eight of the new album's ten tracks, giving the album a consistent flow and style. In a departure from his electronic roots, Thomson also sought to capture the energy of the band's live performances, where many of the new songs had their beginnings, and several of the tracks were recorded "live off the floor". For the first time, Thomson shared production duties - recruiting LA-based producer/engineer Krish Sharma to help realise his vision for an album which cleverly blurs the boundaries between pop, alternative and electronica.

Well, I'm going for a sort of post punk meets a dark, raw, jazz, groove, shoegaze meets disco kinda sound... But I'll be happy if it sounds amazing and doesn't sound like that...
Hi Hamish! super stoked to finally hear the Hermit...I'm glad I took a few minutes to listen. I really dig it. I hope to come see you at the end of March! xo.
