HEADSPACE is DJ Yamin and Mr. Napkins: Hip-hop for your mind's eye and your ass's
feet.
In summer 2005, Mr. Napkins was looking for a new apartment, and an old college pal was simultaneously hoping to fill the available room in his three-bedroom pad. When Napkins hopped on the lease, it was a hell of a happy accident for indie hip-hop, because the third resident of the apartment happened to be DJ Yamin. It didn't take long for the two to discover their mutual hip-hop jones and start throwing Napkins' articulate, introspective lyrics over Yamin's soul-, funk-, and world music-drenched beats. Here you can hear the first fruits of that collaboration.
MR. NAPKINS (aka Zach Sherwin) got his first two rap tapes in 1990: Naughty by Nature's self-titled debut and Heavy D's "Peaceful Journey." In the years since then he's been honored to cipher with such MCs as Mr. Lif, Naughty themselves, and lots of guys standing around at parties. For his day job, Napkins performs with sketch comedy group The Late Night Players (http://myspace.com/latenightplayers), making lots of appearances at clubs, colleges, and comedy festivals around the country. He performs "Bike Stop" at every show and is taller than DJ Yamin.
DJ YAMIN (aka Ben Epstein) has been DJ'ing and producing for over ten years. He has DJ'd every major club/bar in Boston and currently has DJ residencies at The Good Life, Lucky's Lounge and The Diva Lounge. He has done over 7 years of college radio at WMFO and is the founder of Beats Not Bombs, a political organization that gathers artists and activists together to raise money and awareness for such groups as Amnesty International and Campaign to Ban Landmines. He is more red-haired than Mr. Napkins.
