HEAD OF STATE have an underlying politi-punk ethos that spews out into a heavy foundation fused with emotive vocals, whimsical acoustics and straight-up rock guitars!
"With an eerie country twang hidden under the indie/rock guitar riffs, Head Of State prove that there is so much more to Newcastle than, well... whatever Newcastle claims to offer. Having supported heavyweight musicians such as The Drones and 28 Days, this fousome are nothing to turn your nose up at. Introspective lyrics and a rock sensibility evoking images of the early Black Crowes. The combination of the untuned television, the ballerina and the lead vocalist's intense stare has created a truly special piece of music content."
- Monique (WotNext Music Scout) on the "Realize" film-clip.
"...the standout band of the night, with a well-developed, individual style; a mature mix of more subtle, introspective punk elements with a rock edge. The Eddie Vedder-esque vocals of singer Murray Dickinson and politically-inspired lyrics, combined with the band's musical sophistication and live energy made them a pleasure to watch."
- Faster Louder
"...song rocks more... a bit of a Reef (UK) vibe, maybe Black Crowes, maybe a little Pilots. I'd call it commercial post-grunge. Good luck."
- Jack Endino (Producer - Nirvana "Bleach")
HEAD OF STATE are a rock band that focuses on dynamics, the art of the song, and deliver the singer/songwriter feel through the means of a rock band.
It all began in April 2003 in a quiet suburb of Newcastle, Australia.
HEAD OF STATE now stand as, in alphabetical order, Ty Brennock on bass, Levi Dallen on drums, Murray Dickinson on vocals/guitar, and Tim Marriott on guitar.
HEAD OF STATE are from Newcastle. HEAD OF STATE have played heaps of rad places (Annandale, Cambridge, Newcastle Entertainment Centre, Hopetoun, Metro, Bar On The Hill, Greenroom, Oxford Tavern, "Shoreshocked", "Strikeback") with heaps of rad bands (The Drones, Airbourne, The Sleepy Jackson, Wolf & Cub, Spoon, Faker, Shihad). HEAD OF STATE love playing live and people like seeing HEAD OF STATE. HEAD OF STATE work hard on making the songs the best songs in the universe. HEAD OF STATE's drummer breaks heaps of sticks. HEAD OF STATE have rad beards. HEAD OF STATE think they dress rad, but people think HEAD OF STATE dress bad. HEAD OF STATE lets the music speak for itself.
HEAD OF STATE received a personal hand-written note of thanks from the legendary Tom Waits upon receiving their demo! In 2005 HEAD OF STATE were hand-picked by another hero, Neil Young, to have a song featured as a Song Of Protest on his official website! That song was "Pointless". HEAD OF STATE also won the Listeners' Choice Award at the 1233 ABC Newcastle Music Awards in 2006 for "Pointless".
Anyways... believe the hype! We are just around the corner, Motherfuckers!
And remember, vote for HEAD OF STATE at Triple J Unearthed!
