Taking equal inspiration from classic pop/rock and the revivalist new wave movement of the early 2000s, Hobson's Choice formed in 2001 in Charlottesville, VA.
Brian Spreng (drums), Matt Cook (bass), Andrew Leahey (vocals, guitar), and Jim Thomson (guitar, vocals) comprised the initial lineup, and a series of local shows and self-financed regional tours established Hobson's Choice as a hometown draw. Local keyboardist (and fellow University of Virginia student) Evan Smith joined in fall 2003, and the band temporarily decamped to Richmond, VA, to record their debut release. 3:10 was issued the following January, and its initial pressing sold out within months. By summer 2005, however, the group had quietly disbanded, with several members relocating to New York and Thomson resurfacing as the lead guitarist of Le Loup. ~ Andrew Leahey
