Influences
An early interest in poetry has led to well contructed and poignant lyrics with a sense of humour. Growing up listening to 60s and 70s soul records and classic jazz icons such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee, and more mainstream influences such as The Animals, Buddy Holly, Carole King, Gladys Knight, has led Hannah to a diverse concoction of influences in her writing.
Meet Hannah Bristow, a singer / songwriter.
Think soul induced melodies, acoustic jazz, and honest lyrics contrasted by a folksy live section and you get the gist of it. Hannah is an experienced stage performer who has expressed herself through music from a young age.
Originally born in London, Hannah grew up in the musically fertile Avon region, which spawned the likes of Massive Attack, Portishead and Smith & Mighty. She describes herself as having a completely free artistic upbringing.
"My parents were hippies and encouraged me to do music at a very early age", she explains. "My mum was a dancer (who taught Kate Bush) and my dad, a violin maker. I grew up listening to the likes of James Taylor, Joni Mitchell and Billie Holiday"
Initially starting off writing poetry, Hannah began playing the piano aged 12. She hasnt looked back ever since. Her debut album, Vine, written and recorded with her previous Bristol based group, Eludea, was released in 2001 on Cup of Tea Records.
Following the release of this album, Hannah has supported the likes of Keane and Martina Topley Bird.
Now based in London, Hannah is taking her musical direction into much more innovative territories. She is combining her Bristol Sound influence with classic soul jazz and a folksy edge. She is currently in the studio working on her second album with her new six piece band.
Hannah writes about love and lifes journeys, capturing the emotion of ones personal progression and growth. And it is these stories combined with her strikingly poignant vocal abilities and her extraordinary upbringing that make her the unique and accomplished artist she is today.
