Private Tears Blues Matters Magazine CD Review
Guitar Jack, aka Jack Wargo, has a resume that many would die for. He has played with artists ranging from Ray Charles to Billy Preston, The Jackson's to John Fogerty. Accomplished on both electric and acoustic guitar, his versatility spans many styles, which makes him an in-demand artist, so much so he has become a permanent fixture at both studio sessions and local jam sessions in LA, where he lives. "Private Tears" is an album that ably demonstrates his talents and abilities. Of the thirteen tracks, twelve are Guitar Jack originals with a bonus track of Chuck Berry's 'In The Wee Wee Hours', whilst guesting on this release are some of the artists for whom he has played, including Billy Preston and The Sweet Inspirations. Opening with the wah-wah inflected 'South Cali Special', a number that recalls some of SRV's sounds and feel, Jack instantly stamps his mark and the music, moving through straight-Blues, rock, pop and even a Quincy Jones sounding tune, 'It's Over'. Best track here is the slow-Blues ballad of the title track. Opening with a slow mesmerizing string laden sound, Jack's voice creates a soulful appeal where the listener can relate to the sadness that is being sung about, then a very poignant sounding guitar takes the whole to a completely new height before mournful guitar and strings bring the lot back to earth. Jack has used a sizeable number of musicians making this release and his use of horns and strings is tasteful throughout. A very enjoyable release and one that I hope reaches a wide audience who may be able to appreciate someone who is usually in the background.
