Created in January 2007, CurbJob Comics is an emergence of two styles and ideas spawned from Joey Lee and Shawn Cruz. CurbJob Comics is the only Modesto based comic book production combining forces to offer a book with a bold variety of crude humor, light hearted stories, and the occasional BLUDGEONING!
ABOUT JOEY LEE
Joey Lee started studying his favorite cartoons through pencil work at the young age of 8 or 9, he forgets which. While growing up he favored classic Disney cartoons, Warner Bros., and of course, Ren & Stimpy. Through these influences, he worked up a definitive style of cartooning without any formal instruction.
When asked about his work, Joey stated: “I feel that Cartoons should be light-hearted and for entertainment purposes only. I don’t like when a cartoon series tries to create a depressing epic storyline like Aeon Flux; cartoons are meant to be humorous and endearing.”
ABOUT SHAWN CRUZ
Shawn Cruz has also drawn since he was very little, mimicking comic strips and drawing copies of infamous cartoon characters like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Garfield for his friends. But as the years passed, he put work ahead of artwork, doing tattoo designs and band logos in his spare time, and of course, reading comic books. Finally, he got drunk one night and decided that he should do a comic book of his own.
“I would have to say that I’ve never been into super heroes like Superman or the Incredible Hulk, my heroes were Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, and Cassie Hack. I think that Seeley and Vasquez gave birth to a whole new comic book alternative genre, and I would love to produce a comic book that perhaps helps maintain an alternative to spandex-clad, traditional comic book heroes.” -Shawn Cruz
Who I'd like to meet:
Here at Curb-Job Comics, "dork" is a term of endearment. We fuckin love dorks because we're dorks and dorks read our books. Each month we will dedicate a slice of our page to one of the biggest GEEKS that dig our book...
MAY 2008
DEVIN SKELTON
This is Devin. He is the lead singer for a band called POTATOE FAMINE (awesome band). He plays guitar, banjo, and mandolin. But thats not why he's a dork. He's read our books and since he found out about Curbjob, he's tried to be as supportive as possible. Also, and more importantly, in Devin's perfect world, ALL of his movies, books, and MUSIC would be alphabetized and categorized by genre; with dividers for each genre and divider cards for each letter of each genre.
So that anybody could walk into his collection and know exactly where to find something, and exactly where to put it back. and if there was any question, he would have a binder next to that collection that had everything alphabtized with columns next to it saying where everything went.
GEEZ DEVIN! ANAL! but dorky enough to bring him the honored place of MAY'S DORK OF THE MONTH!
THANKS DEVIN!
I love the new Voodoo Boogie avatar relating to your next book. All the best debuting it on Free Comic Book Day and thanks for the compliments on the new art for June's issue 2 and the fall's Monarch Comics Chronicles anthology. Have a great weekend.
Be well, Witch Hunter
"Witch hunts aren't about hunting witches. They never were."
