Day of the Dead Beats, the annual St. Louis celebration of Beat poetry, happens again at the Way Out Club on Saturday, November 1st, 2008 from 8 p.m. to Midnight. Since 1997, the year both Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs passed into the afterlife, St. Louis poets, actors and personalities have gathered on the Day of the Dead or Dia de Los Muertos to read poetry of the Beat Generation in remembrance of those who are gone, but not forgotten. This year's event will once again feature selections from Burroughs and poems and pieces from other Beats such as Diane Di Prima, Ann Waldman, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Herbert Huncke, Kenneth Patchen, Bob Kaufmann, Jack Kerouac, Charles Bukowski, Gregory Corso, Michael McClure, Kenneth Rexroth, Philip Lamantia and Jack Micheline.
The line-up is stacked with some of St. Louis' better known writers, both young and more-established. Joining in on the fun for only the second time will be a few of the Get Born readings poets, including Brock Walker, Joe Wetteroth, Erin Wiles and Ken Brown and writer, editor, record-producer and movie director, Chris King. Other returning luminaries will be: Michael Castro, Philip Gounis, K. Curtis Lyle, Ann Haubrich, Greg Hazleton and the event organizer since 2004—Brett Underwood. I'm going to spin two St. Louis biggies: Michael Castro and Eugene Redmond and the middle set will be a nod to the upcoming Father's Day which might sound kind of sweet, considering my Dad died last summer, but I think it will be pretty heavy...and it will be, I guarantee, the only set you will ever hear putting Saul Williams, Sylvia Plath and Ogden Nash toghether.
