to offer the Fourth annual "Tucson Gem and Jam". The event will take
place February 8th and 9th, 2008 at The Hut, 305 4th Ave. Tucson,
Arizona.
Integrating music, art, dance, gems, minerals, and
sustainability. This year's event features two days of music on two
stages in the heart of downtown Tucson, coinciding with the Tucson gem
and mineral exposition.
Gem and Jam will host an outdoor and indoor stage, as well as its
own gem and mineral showcase. The event will also be focused around
sustainable living practices.

Who I'd like to meet: Sustainability: Gem and Jam 2008
We are proud to be taking a progressive approach to the sustainability aspect of this years event. Our goal is to be 100% Carbon Neutral, which means that the event will offset all the calculated CO2 emissions and embodied energies (IE; Stage/sound needs, Flights/Travel , venue electricity usage etc.) going into the production of the event. This year we are happy to host a series of educational workshops.
We hope that you can attend the greening of the event because we plan to do it live! Make sure you arrive early to catch the workshops! your admission is included in your day or two-day pass. If you plan to attend please feel free to contact us for more details / volunteer opportunities.
Workshops are from 5-7pm each day taking place prior to the music in the outdoor area.
Come find us in the Eco-Zone!
An updated schedule of workshops will be posted as we near the event.
Please feel free to ask questions or sign up to be a part of the group!
How are we being progressively green?
* 100% CARBON NEUTRAL event
* 2-day Workshop / Discussion series
* Off-Grid Solar generator for outdoor area
* Bio-diesel for generator onsite
* Biodegradable/compostable food-ware onsite
* Green product/service showcase
* Local renewable resources
* Eco-Zone for workshop/education and info booth
Workshops
* Permaculture and Urban Rainwater Harvesting with Brad Lancaster
* A Green Response hosted by Peter J Clark. Discussion on advanced greening initiatives, solar technology and how the culture of music is "going green".
More to be announced...
Greening Initiative details
* One tree will be planted for every ticket purchased through InTicketing!
* All the cups and vendor food wares are required to be made out of biodegradable and compostable materials. Most vendors will be using products manufactured by Trellis Earth, www.trellisearth.com
* Electricity will be purchased directly from a local renewable resource, Tucson Electric Power Company (TEP) and their program "GreenWatts". TEP's program, GreenWatts, enables supporters to invest directly in the creation of "green" power. For each "GreenWatt" that you adopt, TEP will create 20-kilowatt hours per month of electricity from renewable energy resources such as the springerville solar array below.
* On site "Off-Grid" Photovoltaic power system for Vending / Eco-Zone area provided by Our Future Now, www.ourfuturenow.org
Glossary of terms
Bio Diesel: Petroleum diesel- equivalent processed fuel derived from biological sources (vegetable oil/post-consumer waste oils) which can be used in unmodified diesel engines. The generator on site will be fueled with B-99 which is made from one percent standard diesel fuel and 99 percent vegetable oil. for more info visit: www.biodiesel.org
Carbon Footprint: The total amount of CO2 and other greenhouse gases emitted over the course of the event, lifestyle, Product or service.
Carbon Neutral: There are two principle meanings:
1. It can refer to the practice of balancing carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels, with renewable energy that creates a similar amount of energy, so that the carbon emissions are compensated, or alternatively using only renewable energies that don't produce and carbon.
2. It is also used to describe the practice of carbon offsetting, by paying others to remove 100% of the carbon dioxide emitted from the atmosphere or by funding carbon projects that should lead to the prevention of future greenhouse gas emissions or by buying carbon credits (in the various "green tag" forms available) to remove them through carbon trading. although this may seem loose, Gem and Jam will be buying electricity directly from the Springerville solar array (photo included) in Tucson.
Although the music rocks, I wonder who carbon footprint free all the red plastic cups everywhere are. Is the venue subject to the same restrictions as you say your vendors are?
